Hey all,
I'm thinking of using the Trans-Siberian Railway to get to Europe this Fall. Has anyone tried it? I'd appreciate any sort of reports, reviews or tips on the subject. I'd especially like to know if anyone knows any cheaper Asia-to-Europe-by-land routes, especially Southeast Asia. |

hey,
I haven't tried it but I plan to next May, I'll go from Vladivostok to Moscow then on to Berlin and on to France, ending in London.
A great website if you haven't found it already is http://www.seat61.com/
The guy that runs is replies to e-mails personally and is great guy.
When exactly do you plan to go?
Good luck |

Thanks for the link! I'm thinking of doing the full Beijing - Moscow run in October. |

Are you an American citizen? If so, it's quite a bit harder than if you're another nationality to get to Europe over land via SE Asia (thinking of Iran being the biggest obsticle). |

The point that needs to be made about the Trans Siberian, is that it will cost at a minimum 1.7/1.8 million each way (I'm talking Seoul to London all inclusive) and will take a minimum of 10-12 days.
It is not cheaper than flying. It does cost a lot of money and few teachers in Korea that I know, have that much time to spend on a train.
The two trains bound for Moscow (which originate in Beijing) are almost exclusively filled with Chinese people. Few Russians take them. I spent a week on one of these recently and spending a week in a compartment with 3 Chinese people. It was a dirty, noisy, degenerate experience.
The train from Vladivostok (train #1 or 2) is mostly Russian (because it is domestic) and is the better of the three Trans Sib trains if you do end up going. |

Even though it may be accurate for that experience, I don't know if Lenin would approve of the dialectic, comrade. |
