By God if there ain't no cuban sandwich place in Korea, I'm gonna start chain of those stands outside the universities... Razz

pan criollo (like a crusty french bread)
roast pork
sweet ham (jamon dulce)
Swiss cheese
mayonnaise
mustard
pickles (optional)

Select a crusty bread which is soft inside.
Put a dollop of mayonnaise and mustard on the bread and layer shaved or very thinly sliced ingredients inside.

Butter the outer crust and press in a sizzling panini grill or sandwich press.

Looks like too much meat, not enough pickles and mayo to be a crowd pleaser here....nice, crunch bread? As a sandwich? People are awfully conflicted about sandwiches here, is it a meal or a pastry?

Bring it on, primo...I'm done with rice and red pepper.

It's Ropa Vieja (old clothes)

and no..... Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad no spanish food here. I have to import all of my stuff (sazon con asafran, black beans, goya hot sauce, adobo criollo, etc.). The rice, well, I have to go to Itaewon and buy rice there (Korean rice destroys my cuban cooking).

I tell you...that sandwich....oh man....looks great!!!

Chicharrones de pollo
Ropa Vieja
Frijoles Negros
Platanos Maduros
Arroz con Pollo (I make the best in the world)
Bistec de Palomilla
Moros
Tostones

man...ok...i need to stop...arghhhhh

CubanLord, how's about some Cuban music (live preferably) and Cuban java (the best on planet earth) with that sandwich joint? I'd be there in a jiffy.

Don't think for a second that opening up a cuban restaurant smack in the middle of Itaewon hasn't crossed my mind once or twice. I would make a killing with all of those soldiers (guaranteed income).

Unfortunately, most of the items I need to run a business of the sort would need to be imported. There is NO WAY of finding that crap here. Cost would go through the roof. Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad

Yeah. Sigh. It's just too much of a battle I'd imagine.

Should you ever consider relocating to Bangkok they have fine (I mean fine) grocery stores and local markets, and distributers who don't rip you off too much. You can get most of what you need there to set up shop very nicely (except the coffee, which seems to be available only in country).

This place is supposed to be good.

Whoa, wait a minute!

Casa Maya has cuban sandwiches, or at least they used to.

It's undergone so many changes.

It first opened near Hankuk University, relocated to Apgujeong, and now I think it's somewhere around Hongik University/Hongdae.

He can't even find a decent hamburger. Confused

But seriously, don't know much about Cuban sandwiches, but they won't fit the Korean mold, so yeah, it'll cost a lot. If someone opened a shop, they would more than likely need to know how to make several of the ingredients on their own to avoid importing, or strike up a deal with a distributor or something.

OMG- that sandwich looks sooooooooooooo good. I would pay good money to get my hands on that right now. Too bad you can't buy decent deli meat and cheeses here. Even the place at Hannam supermarket is lacking IMO (they have a lot of meats I won't touch)- and they're wicked $$$. Even if someone wanted to open a deli here, I don't know where they'd find a distributor. Subway doesn't use anything local, because its consistent every time I go there, so they muct be autonomous.
