That is indeed a substandard looking job. Don't know if it is for the institute of the department. All I know is that the departmental jobs for the universities I mentioned are still pretty decents.

2.5 for 18 hours? I was getting 2.5 back in 1998 for a 15 hour, three day a week schedule; good housing provided. I took 2.4 for 16 hours in desparation once, too, but I regretted taking that job as soon as I got it.

Whatever makes you happy. Granted, the pay and conditions have slid into a slippery abyss, so perhaps that is a 'good' job these days.

From what I read and hear the standards at most uni have dropped significantly from the late 90's and early 00's.

Although I'm sure that there are unis out there that still have high standards those positions are either taken and highly cherished by those who have them or when a position does come up the competition for them is so high that only the highly qualified seem to get them.

Now, my academic qual. are good but I don't have the elusive uni teaching experience and that in it self keeps me form getting the top uni jobs. Trust me I've applied to over 20 unis this year and only 4 have got back to me and of those four none of them are considered top unis. more like 3rd level unis.

So, I considere this job to be only a stepping stone to bigger and better things. I figured moving into the big city, getting to know people there, making connections while getting some solid uni experience will put me in a better position to apply for better uni's in a couple of years time. I just hope that the school is a good one and just allows the teachers to come, teach and leave at the end of the day without any or minimal hassle. From what I've heard so for they seem to be ok.

I think you're making the right move, then.

The one thing I do worry about, and I've posted about it extensively, is whether or not there will actually be any jobs to 'work up to' in the future. Also, like you said, even if there are, there will be so very few that only the teachers with the best educations and experience (not to mention that know everyone) will get them.

SNU and Korea University are already crap. Perhaps a bit better than your current target job, but not by much. Korea university has them working more hours for less, and SNU has upped contact hours, drastically reduced pay, and clipped overtime. Actaully, Yonsei in Seoul only pays around 2.5 to start, and doesn't give housing. However, Yonsei does provided increases based on levels and numbers of degrees, in addition to annual pay increases. Hongdae starts at around 2.5, and provides a ton of coin for 'chunsae'. They also leave you alone to do your job, although word has it they don't provide much overtime (something I'd like, actually). Same for Ewha. The pay isn't that great (2.5 base for 12 hours, I believe), but they leave you alone. Don't think they provide housing, though.

Having been here a while, I would admit that you are getting a good shake. At the same time, I'd also say that the fact that your target job is now considered 'good' is a reflection of how university employment conditions have tumbled over the years.

Hey PRagic,

Considering your experience can you do me a favor and look at the contract from the uni and tell me if it ok. Its the first time I see one from a uni so I'm not sure what to expect. To be honest with you I have some concerns about certain things. I've highlighted them for you to see.

Thanks in advance.

Wow, it'd been years since I'd last read a contract. After 10 years, you pretty much just sign the ass wipe as it is worthless. Still, if you want to be specific...

1. All of the phrasing takes choice out of your hands, and leaves you vulnerable to the dictates of your boss. I would be wary of that and reword it to include an 'upon agreement of instructor' clause.

2) Make sure they know UP FRONT that they WILL be paying your severance BASED ON ALL OVERTIME, HOUSING, AND Salaries paid. Many schools are still mistakenly under the impression that they only pay severance based on your base salary. NOT TRUE. Maybe they'll think twice about loading you up if they know they'll be paying for it. OR you could just keep quiet and then LOAD UP YOUR LAST THREE MONTHS with EVERYTHING YOU CAN GET! This way, they'll have to pay you a load of severance. They'll lose if they try to skate it.

3) I don't like the fact that you'll be teaching institute and for-credit classes. Why should they double dip their foreign instructors?

4) I don't like the fact that they are trying to control your vacations even in the contract. This could mean that they have had bad exeriences with people running during a vacation previously. Could be a red flag. Could also mean they are friggin control freaks. Nother red flag.

I would talk to someone that has worked there at least 3 years..more is possible, and get the scoop.

Good luck to you. Seems like another pretty standard screw over for substandard pay if you ask me.
