For all you divers out there. . . In your opinion, which is the best dive shop to go with on Ko Tao? I was hoping to stay away from the boats of 25+ divers etc. Obviously a safe and insured place. Preferably a dive shop on a nice beach that is quieter and more relaxing. Share your experience, please. You all have always pointed me in the right direction.
On a side note. . .I have 6 weeks in Thailand and Malaysia. 2 will be spent in the Samui area. Then I will travel down to Malaysia and I am considering Borneo.
1) Any must do's in peninsular Malaysia?
2) If you have been to Borneo, is it that much different from the mainland?
I am starting late in the planning of my trip as I leave on Friday but at least I wont be teaching!
Thank you tons for your reply!

Borneo is certinaly differant from the mainland! You couldn't compare KL to KK. Think of KK as being like JB only smaller. I've only been to Sabah, and I went diving in Sipadan. To dive in Sipadan you have to go to Semporna - possibly the end of the world. You don't have to stay there, you can stay on Mabul island. Scuba junkies, the dive shop at the pier in Semporna, have just opened a brand new hostel opposite their shop - very very cheap and very nice - and the bar/pub and swimming pool out back were being planned, so at least you don't have to stay in grubby accomodation. The town itself though, oh my god.
Compared to the mainland, Borneo is like the forgotten backwaters of Malaysia. |

I have dived in Ko Tau and would recommend Big Blue. If you are doing any certs be sure to pick a good shop and I have had 2 different people give me stories of how many cut corners and while you will get the cert - you may not get quality training. |
