FYI OP, to get your laptop specific drivers, all you have to do is go to your laptop manufacturer's website and download them. It's easy.

I wouldn't be quite so cavalier in my attitude, though you do seem to have had a run of good luck. As I said, I have never actually done it myself, but some time ago a friend wiped his Korean Windows and installed English. It was a nightmare past that. No video drivers, no sound...

Better to be careful. Get all of your drivers in order before you do anything, or as schwa said, take it to a shop.

of course there were no drivers, he has to download them for his laptop once installed.

and I am sure you guys already know that a driver is a driver. It doesn't matter what OS you have. Drivers are nothing but code. Code is a universal language hence why you can download them for whatever os.

drivers are never a problem as Windows XP comes with pre-installed generic drivers to at least get your PC functional. Once you are up and running with your fresh copy of XP, get online and download them. Even if the hardware was made in Korea, you can still download the English version of the drivers. I have done it 3 to 4 times already. No problems as of yet.

laptop drivers are a different story. Vanilla XP doesn't always work with laptops.

I beg to differ. I haven't had a problem installing Vanilla XP onto 3 different laptops already (2 from the states and 1 from Korea). I guess it just depends.

He's not saying it won't work. He's saying it depends. Just like you. So you're not really differing.

Thanks.

Laptops sometimes come in a hardware configuration where there are no driver options. Many laptops (used to?) come with a couple of CDs...one would be the OS, which cannot be changed. Slipped into the OS CD will be the specific drivers needed for that configuration.

Again, I haven't done it, and my friend's experience was a while ago with an old laptop. I'm sure (apparently) things have gotten to the point that hardware inside a laptop is similar to a desktop in that it's drivers can be changed/upgraded/downloaded. This wasn't always the case, and my advice was to for the OP to get everything they need before going ahead and wiping. I have had my share of computer defeats - enough to know that one can rarely be too cautious.

"Code" is to OSs what "Language" is to humans. They aren't all understood by everybody.

Hey folks!

Thanks for all the replies and help.

It turns out that my school has an IT dept. who have taken possession of my notebook and assure me they can sort it. So fingers crossed....

I really appreciate all the help, however. I'm embarrassingly clueless about all this. And even more embarrassed about how I ended up in this predicament! Embarassed

But cheers anyway! Laughing

Question really ought to be: Why would anyone want to purchase a rash?

Good God man ... the whole thing sounds like a major health risk.

Haven't you yet tried to go out & pick up some naturally soothing cream?

Ah, your concern for my health is touching igotthisguitar, though probably unwise. This rash may be contagious! Laughing

Since you mention that you're wary of PC tech, my suggestion would be to get the assistance of a Korean speaking friend and go down to a local PC repair store and have them tell the merchant to do a clean install of Windows *English* XP.
