Corporal,
Personally if someone is that unhappy that they have to spew crap at someone then they need to take a long walk off a short pier.
That goes for anyone one this board. |

I realize I've only been at my school for a few weeks, so the long time GEPIK people are going to use me as a dart board.
I started at the beginning of this month and have had a good experience with my school so far. They have been accomondating in terms of things I've asked for that weren't in my contract.
This past week they gave me an extra day and a half off for my wedding, although they offered me a week off. I felt it was too much.
Yes, there is only 14 days vacation, but combined with school holidays, it will turn out to be at least three weeks (look at October before you argue about that one).
Maybe the board of education is getting tougher, but I'm willing to stick it out for the year. I plan on going back home after this since I will have been here for several years. |
Considering the fact that you are ENTITLED to a week off for your wedding (with pay) under the terms of your contract... you just got screwed.
October is Chusok and EVERYONE in the country gets it off. It is a national holiday. Even in your home country you get national holidays off with pay.
Better find yourself a tube of lube... looks like you are going to need it.

he said he was offered a week and declined. He didnt get screwed. |

Jinju,
Thanks for making my point. There is a clear difference.
Again, my feeling is that the person who responded negatively made a choice to do so and I feel it was an unwarrented attack. |

I'd like to know what any of you twisted sisters are actually doing about the "horrors" of GEPIK contracts.

This just in about my job. All I have to say is thank god I am leaving. When I had planned on staying I had booked my flight home for 3 weeks. Now that I only get my 9 days in the summer, I am still going home because I have to be at a wedding (I am the best man). Anyways, my principal decided to give me two days off when I came back to Korea to let me rest, which would in fact give me 4 extra days because of it being a Thursday and Friday.
I am supposed to be back in Korea for those 2 days and do cultural things. Okay fine, whatever. But now my VP is demanding that I bring back the receipts and tickets from whatever I do and I HAVE TO RIGHT A REPORT ABOUT WHEREVER I GO AND HAND IT INTO THE VP.
The f-ing a-hole is giving me homework even though the principal didn't care and was just going to let me have the two days off. He said that he doesn't trust me and thinks I may stay in Canada for an extra day and that would be just completely unacceptable. You know, how dare I visit my sister who I haven't seen in 2 years.
The stupid VP has treated like a child since I have arrived. He demanded the same things back during the winter and said that he wanted photocopies of my plane tickets and my parents address and phone number in Canada before I could go on vacation because maybe I wouldn't come back.
Maybe he needs to take a big long look at himself and then see that perhaps the problem is himself and the fact that he is pushing teachers away.
There is also more to this, but I just don't think I can write clearly right now because I am so..... soooo........ fucking pissed off.

| Go over his head to the principal. You are leaving, right? So go to the principal and tell him the VP is underminign his suathority and by not trusting you he is also calling into question the principal's decision making. Have a sit down with the principal and discuss this. Ask the principal if you really need to do this and if he says no, dont bother turning anything in. If the VP then asks you what happened tell him in a way others will hear that the principal said you didnt have to. Make the VP lose major face. What do you care anyway? |

In light of recent events, encouraging someone to off themself isn't merely uncool, it's global thermo nuclear uncool.
Goddamit....Think, before you start spewing the verbal diarrhea! |

| I've told them I'll be re-signing, but haven't signed the contract just yet. Having read this thread, I asked my co-teacher to look into any recent demands that may have been handed down from the head office - extra unpaid meetings, changes in overtime pay, getting farmed out, less vacation, more hours, etc. She made some phone calls, and as far as we know, things at our school will remain unchanged. |

What recent events?, korea beating togo?. Get back to reality mack. This thread name should be changed as well since so far you have failed to present a convincing argument as to why not to sign with GEPIK. |

I didn't know shawner, I never met him, I don't see how his death is in any way related to daves esl cafe, therefore I can't see where the problem is with telling someone to jump off a bridge, after all it's not meant to be taken literally is it, and if someone reads something akin to "go jump off a bridge" on an internet forum and subsequently "jumps off a bridge" then they were going to do it anyway.
get over yourselves already. |

With some of the irresponsible, unprofessional rhetoric/banter on this thread, is anyone taking this seriously?
I don't work for GEPIK, but I wouldn't rely on a bunch of Dave's posters who think they know everything. Take this thread with a grain of salt. Do your research when signing contracts. Each individual has their own situation/perspective.
Ajgeddes' example may be a result of communication breakdown which happens quite often in a new culture.
With GEPIK, seems that every school would be run a little differently and when you sign a contract, some conditions will be unsatisfactory. Take in mind you signed the contract in the first place, and must abide by it and the decisions of the principal or head office. Otherwise, if not happy, look for another job. But, please, I hope students are taught something at these schools. |

Where does the quality of teaching come into this argument at all? We have been discussing contracts.
At my school, it is not a breakdown in communication. My co-teacher (of sorts) also can not believe the way they have been treating me lately. We get along really well and she is upset to see me leaving. Please, do not go talking about why I may be having problems when really you have no idea. Also, who is talking about breaking what it says in the contract or whether they are going to abide by what the principal says. What's being discussed is what seems to be the stupid things they are doing to ruin the program and they way principals and VP's seem to act like they can do whatever they want. |
