I was wondering if anybody has any opinions on Incheon. I have not found (or searched for) any thoughts on this city.

I am currently deciding on two positions in Incheon. One is a public school, the other is a private school. Both offers are pretty similar (schedule, salary, benefits, etc...). I had a really good conversation with a former teacher of the private school and waiting on replies from current teachers of the public school.

Just choosing between private and public schools, which would you take?

Thanks in advance for your comments about Incheon and advice about my choice.

What do you mean by 'private school'? A private academy or a private elementary, middle, or high school?

I'd choose a public school over a private academy. It seems odd that the hours would be similar if it's a private academy. They're usuall very different.

I work in a private elem. school. I could not have asked for anything better. I enjoy it here more than I probably would at a Uni. Figure at a Uni....after 3 years...you are canned whether you are good or not. Hogwons...the name speaks for itsself. As for anything else...well...they are few and far in between.

The may look similar on paper but I can assure you that the loads will probably feel a lot different. Do you know the name of the private academy? Myslef and some of the others here are familiar with many academies in Incheon.

As for the 'loads', it may be a case of "how am I going to prepare for and teach classes of 45 when the 'co-teachers' don't even show up!!!" or "what the hell am I supposed to do with no resources and a class of 10 screaming 7-year-old beginners!!!".

Incheon is just your average city in Korea. It's expanded a lot since the construction of Incheon International Airport and consequently has a lot more traffic than before. Incheon also seems to encompass a wide area, so some suburbs of Incheon can be a bit of a backwater. There are no special wonders about being located there. It has some seaside - so-so. Close to some offshore islands - pretty. Ferry links to China. Convenient transport link into Seoul if you live near a subway station.

I would definately go with the public school job. I'm sure you saw the thread about GEPIK with lots of negative stuff in it. I've only been at my school for three weeks but really enjoy it. Not everyone in GEPIK is unhappy.

My opinion on Incheon is that it's crap.

If anyone has any good things to say about Incheon I'd be delighted to stand corrected.

In terms of my area, the only downside is getting to Seoul is a pain in the butt. I have to goto Juan Station and take the express train to Youngsan.

There are some industral areas that look much dirtier then the one I'm in, so I can't complain.
