Seoul has madatory recycle rules. I'm not sure what they are but they apply to me none the less.
where can I get one of those green net bags for my recyclables?
Do I have to use a gov't approved trash bag always? |

Put your recycleables in the bins next to you apartment / villa. You don't need the fancy green mesh bag. There should be bins/baskets marked for them.
Yes, you must use the approved trash bags for your wet and non-recycleable garbage. |

TY for the repy Tom. I have reasons for wanting my own bag, its more convenient. The ajummas complain if I put too much stuff in them.
What are the recyc rules anyway? |

seouls recycling thing sounds really hard out!!!
in pohang i put my recycling into wal mart bags and they get taken away no problems!!

I had a dreadful time buying trash bags when I first got here. I went to a large supermarket, hunted up and down the aisles, and couldn't find anything. I had looked up the word in the dictionary, but couldn't recall it, and had to resort to miming with a little plastic garbage bin. I know various Korean words for "bag" but none of them would quite suit the purpose.
Finally an employee got on the phone, translated my request, and someone pulled some blue bags out from behind the counter. Of course, the next day, I saw some white ones for sale in plain few at the local convenience store.
So today I had a very stern talking to by the grandpa who looks after our building. He saw that I was using a blue bag instead of a white one, and insisted I go to the shop right away to buy the correct bag. The shop was closed, so we agreed I would return tomorrow.
So what's supposed to go in the blue bags? Nuclear waste? Why did someone sell them to me in the first place? |

| Where did you get the blue bags. If you shop at the big stores like Home Plus you can pay an extra 500 won and get a carryout bag that doubles as a garbage bag. Otherwise any corner supermarket has garbage bags. |

This was at a medium sized Lotte grocery mart. I was mystified, but it was my first time shopping for the bags in this town. |

you should buy these trash bags (surregi pongtu) at the nearest local store around your place...that is for the general trash.
for your wet garbage or leftovers you need to buy another bag, (umshikmol surregi pongtu) it's small and yellow. and throw it inside a designated box outside your place.
for your recyclables, you don't need a special bag for it...any shopping bags will do.
the district will charge you (not sure but maybe about 200$) if they caught you throwing out garbage improperly...
sounds confusing at first but you will get used to it.

Ah!
The bags or rather the price you pay to buy them is the key. The bags are expensive but its really not the cost of the bag by itself. The cost of the bag is the cost of the pickup! Thats how they collect the fee.  |
