I organize volunteer English teachers for Samdong Boys' Town, an orphanage in Mapo-gu, Seoul, about ten minutes from the World Cup Stadium (Line 6).
I'll say right off that the last time I posted many people went on about how it was illegal to do volunteer work with an E-2.
Unfortunately, no one else responded.
SO, this ad is for those who have an F-2 visa, or those brave souls with an E-2 who would like to run the risk and help out some kids.
We teach on Sundays, between 1-4 p.m. usually. The boys just moved to a great new facility that has several classrooms. There are books available.

If there is no payement how can it be illegal?

Community service does not fall under the same rules as "work", or does it?

That's a great question. Can we get the answer to this? I understand that it depends on the final interpretation of immigration. Doesn't matter if you get paid or not, what matters is what mood that dude is in that day and how he or she chooses to interpret the law.

I believe the presumption is that you are being paid under the table. But, the likelihood that you will be caught is not worth worrying about. I volunteered there before but just don't have time now.

I have read many posts about the legal situation with doing volunteer work. I have been in Korea for 18 months. I have an F2-1 visa. When I applied for this at Masan immigration I asked if I could do volunteer work.
I was told no problem. So I work 2 days a week at a welfare center in Jinju. I attend to have fun with the kids, I have taught them the alphabet, phonics and numbers but most of the time I play games, watch movies or have cooking classes.
It is a lot of fun for the kids and for me. Because of my volunteering, we now have students from one of the Jinju universities attending on my two days, as volunteers, to help me and learn about the Korean welfare system.

I can tell you with my visa it is not illegal, but it may depend on your visa status, and which immigration office you go to.
If you have the time, volunteering is very rewarding for both you and the kids. I have found that I am respected more in this community because I am prepared to give something back.

My advise is give it a try, but ask immigration first.

I don't know if teaching for free is illegal or not, but it violates my sacred contract.

Then again, considering all of my employer's violations, it really isn't much of a contract.
