I think this is a great thing for the province and the country. We will have to let in more immigrants and they will have to be more skilled. It will also help focus more students into the trades which is what the nation needs. The simple fact is that unless cold fusion is discovered in the next ten years Alberta, Saskatchewan, Nova Scotia and Newfoundland are all going to be booming so roll with it. Go get your welding ticket or become a truckdriver and make the big dollars and then retire, but for the love of god every Canadian please stop b*tching about having too many jobs, because it could disappear very quickly.

Why keep expanding them? Because oil prices are high now, and may not be tomorrow, and thus the window of opportunity reap the maximum benefits is potentially small.

I doubt very much that oil prices will fall any time soon.

They wouldn't be expanding the oilfields if that were the case. They know very well that the days of cheap oil are long gone.

As for the labour shortage, I suppose they will just start importing skilled workers from the states......rather than train the unskilled Canucks.

And the good news is that unlike other boomtimes in other provinces and countries, Alberta under Ralph Klein have been investing in the future. Paying off the debt and running a balanced, surplus budget they have started the Heritage fund, invested in infrastructure and education. They are doing all the right things and of course they are going to develop the resources as much as possible, again do it now before a new breakthrough occurs.

Thats true but its also no better than korea. I have lots of Caper friends working in Ft. Mac and yes they make lots of money but:

The rent is crazy and there is a housing shortage, I know lots of guys who are paying 500$ a month for a couch or a spot on a floor. I might not be making 100K a year but I have my own apartment and its free.

You have to pay tax, 30% income plus 6% sales plus outrageous prices for beer.

I am a Homo so this wouldn't bother me but all you straight guys, Ft. Mac is like 70% men, hot sexy oil working men, but men none the less. Wink

For those of you who failed geography, Ft. Mac is in the chocolate starfish of Canada. Its an outpost, hours from Edmonton, a city famous for a Hockey team and a friggin mall (its fun, but c'mon).

So both have their pro's and con's, and all my friends had to take drug tests, which I would fail if I was living back in Canada!

Of course, there are other places to work besides Ft. Mac., but I'm sure many places in the oilfield or nearabouts are the same now.
