I have enough in Canada that if I had to flee Korea I'd be fine for a while.
I have enough in Korea that if my creditors in Canada got hold of my account I'd could live off what I have here for a while if need be. |

I only said money home, probably once a year, to have in my account so I can pay off my credit cards that I use when I travel. |

I keep a New Zealand dollar account here. So I'm not technically sending money home, however I am not leaving it in won either. |

Other: totally randomly/when ever I feel like it (I've done it twice in 10 months, total: 4.5m). I owe approx 700GBP to my bank so I'll send another 1.5m approx when I feel like it. The rest is staying here. I'd look for some way to make my savings grow but I'm too lazy and it's the kind of thing I say I'm gonna do when having a beer with someone but never actually do and probably never will. The hassle of phone calls, opening accounts, sending money into accounts isn't worth the pittance you gain in my opinion. |

Back in the mid 90's I would just keep it in the Korean banks.
Then we got hit with IMF.
I got screwed.
Lucky for me, my wife's family is loaded.

I generally just send home child support payments.. plus activity fees, sports uniforms, birthdays, Christmas, etc.
Not building any savings back home from my teaching, for sure.
EDIT: um.. monthly. but I think I voted other. Just because I'm not paying any loans or depositing to my own accounts. Korean banks rock. Use 'em.

I used to send home enough to cover my credit card with a little extra. Now, though, I have the distinct pleasure of needing to empty out my Korean account as there is too much money for me to carry on the plane. I just hope that my MOTHER continues with the withdrawals and not my father, as I inherited the bad luck with ATMs from him. |

We posted at the same time. Didn't mean to 'dis you. I also got buggered during IMF.
I think Korean banks are a safe bet, though.
Nice to marry rich, eh? |

I'm the other way round really. My pay is from outside Korea so I transfer money TO Korea most months. Since I've been here, nearly 9 years, that's been around 600,000 USD. I suppose one way or another that's still here: either in cash, property or 3 Alley's drains. |

WangjaSir: I should know, but i don't. Are you married to a k-gal?
You are an enigma to some of us because you aren't a teacher.
Did you ever teach English? Do you have any idea what our
teachers' lives are like? |

Funny you should use the word "Enigma" because as a lad I had a sailing boat called that and I had to look the word up. I was fascinated by its meaning and have ever since strived to become just that: an engima. Learning that I have achieved lifetime ambition means I can die a happy man.
Correct, Mole, I am not a teacher of English. The nearest I suppose was years when for a time I was a visiting lecturer at Cambridge in contract law and project managament. Now, I am just a boring old fart who would sit at a high table in 3 Alley, pontificate and drink more beer than his Korean wife would like claiming that he should feed his own family not Gunter's!
I have often taken wine with several from this board, one has stayed at my place for a while, had financial dealings with several and yes, I guess I can understand a little of the teacher's lot.
(For those who might be interested, the boat was a Merlin-Rocket, a 14ft restricted class, this one designed by Ian Proctor - his Mk X II - sail number 1272).
here's a modern one ...
and here's an older one [img] |

BTW, I see that association has have a vintage section for racing older boats in the class ... here's a nice shot ... my boat (1272) was very much like 1222 ...
