Seoul worries about prostitutes' exodus
The report said Los Angeles police estimate that there are 8,000 Korean prostitutes working in that city and its suburbs.... A Los Angeles police spokesman said that about 90 percent of the department's 70-80 monthly arrests for prostitution involve Korean women.
In a recent case elsewhere in the United States, 33 Korean women were arrested on prostitution charges in Waterbury, Connecticut, on June 2.... prostitution is widespread in districts where Koreans congregate, especially in massage parlors and at the Korean equivalent of short-time lodgings, called "love hotels" here.

We do have the loose moral standards-- because we gave Koreans the idea of prostitution, don't you know. Cool

The title of the article is curious-- Seoul worried about exodus of prostitutes. They want them back?

There was another article in the Tribune last week that explained the concern. Korea is hoping to get 3 month visas available for to the US without needing to go through the lengthy interview process that they now are subject to. One of the requirements for this is that less than 3% of applicants have their application denied for 2 years in a row ( how Korea can make this happen, the article didnt explain). A second concern was that Korea end the flow of Korean prostitutes that are entering and working in the US. I dont remember the exact statistics but it was something like 19 out of every 22 prostitution raid in the US involves Korean prostitutes.

I would say this is the only reason Korea is concerned.

Thought I read somewhere that Koreans were complaining
about how tough it was to get a visa to the US?

This article makes it obvious why.. any korean woman
trying to enter america will be seen as a very possible ho..

Maybe not a such great moment in Korea's PR department

I guess it means that even though a nation might have the 12th biggest economy in the world, it doesn't mean that everybody in that country can make a good living.

Maybe they should introduce tighter regulations for koreans entering the US.
Check their degrees, maybe even a criminal record check. They might steal our women and corrupt our society.

Exactly. There are hundreds of thousands of illegal Koreans in Canada and yet the Koreans are up in arms about maybe a few hundred illegal Canadians. All those wretched illegal sex crazy dope smoking child-molesting Canadian ESL teachers... Rolling Eyes
Koreans have to learn that xenophobia has consequences. If you treat people like crap in your country it can come back to haunt you.

That's a sweeping generalization if I ever heard one. When exactly do you reckon prostitution was brought here? You're not talking about the Korean War are ya?

Could it have not been introduced during the Chosun era or even during Japanese occupation?

Didn't your irony radar flash red on that one? Besides we are talking about the oldest job in the world here... the time it was introduced in korea probably measures in geological eras.

Matthewsworld-- Zolt-- I'm making a joke... obviously prostitution wasn't a 20th-century innovation in Korea.

Prostitution should be legalized and regularized with medical insurance and other stuff.

If people would only realize that this would increase the overall quality and reduce health risks.

*sigh*
