|
I've wondered about this for some time. Other forums, such as www.ajarn.com have one built in. My e-mail server offers one. Spell-check is everywhere. Then it hit me, an epiphany, as it were. Dave deliberately doesn't offer spell-check here in order to separate the players from the pretenders. If one is selling one's time and energy as a teacher of English in these parts, then that particular skill, however scantily based (hell, a BA in bee-keeping will land a job here), ought to be reflected in the posts here. Sloppy English implies a sloppy work-ethic. If you can't tell the difference between 'its' and 'it's', then what are you serving up to your students? Yes, we're frequently lumped together as a bunch of misfits and/or losers who are here to score some easy cash and violate the local maidens, but some of us are here to refine our craft. Where I toil, the money isn't great, but I get better at this racket every day. I take my work quite seriously. I show up every day with the intention of doing the best existential job that I can do. And that is why I'm offended when the pretenders show up, and frankly, they make the rest of us look bad. (The locals can't always tell us apart.) I didn't intend this to turn into a rant, but it is the Solstice, and I suppose that I could be hanging at Stonehenge right now, with a head full of 'shrooms. That's never going to happen. Have a fine summer, teachers and pretenders. |

I'm not sure that's an entirely accurate assertion. It would be useful to have one here though.
I do try my best to spell/punctuate properly given my chosen profession--with a few shortcuts for message board writing. I can understand those who are trying their hand at teaching might not be as precise but perhaps being put through the exercise of teaching English all day their spelling/punctuation/grammar have improved as a result? |

....or the exact opposite! I know after 4 years of teaching in Korea, my vocabulary, grammar and intellectual conversations all decreased. It was like my brain was coasting down a slope to basic English. Thank God for grad school (which, by the way, I just graduated from!) |

Depends on my mood. Sometimes I feel as though I have to check every word I use on here. Other times, I don't care. Rarely, I throw stuff in to see if someone will pick up on it.
It really depends for me. |

phpBB2 doesn't include spellcheck - sperling needs to switch board software to get that feature. read the feature list here: http://www.phpbb.com/features.php |

The problem with the use of a spellcheck function is that it doesn't catch the your/you're type mistakes. People are much too reliant on it as a cure-all for spelling deficiencies. |

Dude, you are not getting off that easy. You're jolly, you're good-natured, you're posts often lead to discussions that people seem to enjoy but there is NO WAY the author of "rebuttle" and "I have never resulted to" is getting a pass on his writing with an excuse like:

Embrace your limitations. I don't try to act like I don't come off, slightly, acerbic once every now and then. Twice a year, perhaps. |

Teaching God (who goes by the name of cubanlord in human form) doesn't need SpellCheck. Because if He spells a word a certain way, "that's the goddam fricken way it's meant to be spelled, because "I'm TEACHING GOD, FU%K IT - & GO 'N' BURN IN HELL if you dare question ME!"

Can you blame me for trying? The other two are true though. |
