Now it is time for me to explain the hypothesis, but I'm afraid Demophobe beat me to it.
This thread was inspired by another thread in which a teacher complained that students don't respect foreign teachers. Yet this teacher referred to the students as "brats" and "punks."
That caused me to wonder if that teacher deserved any respect.
I have heard of a school administrator who always asks job applicants the question "How do you win respect from your students?" He has found that the best candidates say something to the effect of "Respect is a two-way street."
I wanted to see if that statement is true.
There does not seem to be any universally acceptable definition for respect, but I felt safe in saying that name-calling is a sign of disrespect.
So I hypothesized that that there would be:
■ more teachers who complain about disrespect and call their students "brats" or "punks."
■ fewer teachers who complain about disrespect and do NOT call their students "brats" or "punks."
■ fewer teachers who do NOT complain about disrespect and call their students "brats" or "punks."
■ more teachers who complain about disrespect and do NOT call their students "brats" or "punks."
I got what I expected in all categories except the first category.
Teachers in that category probably saw what was up my sleeve and were afraid to respond.
At the time I am writing this message, the tally for the four categories is 2, 9, 5, and 43, respectively.
This yields a chi square reading of .51604125, which is significant at the alpha level of .05. |
