Most of you may know the reason for the different spelling of the countries name on those red T-shirts that everybody is wearing.
I did not, until explained by a Korean friend. Please note it is their explanation, not mine.

Originally, the country was spelt with a "C" (Corea) but during the occupation by Japan, Japan changed the spelling because "C" come before "J" in the alphabet. The Japanese changed the spelling to (Korea) because "K" came after "J".

Because the world cup is held in Germany (Europe) this year, the European countries are more familiar with the spelling of Korea with a "C".
That is why they have the two different spellings of Korea on the shirts.

I hope this bit of trivial information makes your day happier.

Unfortunately your friend is probably mistaken.

Might be a stand up dude, but ask him about the fans...

Korea or Corea?

This is a well-written, well-documented article on the issue.

Personally, I like the "C", but only because it suits my name. Wink

Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes First of all, in Germany it is spelt with a 'K'. Second of all, read the links from Flotsam and stop believing everything you hear. Third of all, what was their excuse in 2002 for using 'C'?

C is such a wussy letter though Smile I can't explain why, but Korea with a K looks so much better than with a C Wink

I spelled with a C it looks a bit more old-world or exotic. Like a reminder of a time that has passed. The K is much suited to the modern Korea that actually exists.

Either way, the bit about the Japanese changing it is straight-up BS, no ice, lime twist.

True. Canada would look much cooler as 'Kanada' like they spell it in Germany and Eastern Europe. The problem with Corea is that you can pronounce it as 'Sorea' and that is just really lame in English. Korea with a 'K' baby, so much better.

Let's start a survey, how many of us Canucks want to be Kanucks? Corea and Kanada! Personally, as a true Canadian, we need to find a letter before A so we can be before America in the future. I know they go by the States and the US, but still... Wink
