Please help!
My Ibook G4 has broken, when I start it up I just get a flashing question mark and a flashing folder.
Is it dead?
Can I get the files off it anyway?, it's 3 years old and it has served me very well so I'm prepared to buy a new one if need be.
If anyone can help I'd appreciate it.
I don't have the installation disks with me in Korea... |

Without the install disks you're in pretty bad shape. Can they be mailed to you? Depending on where you are, there are some Mac service centers in Korea, pretty much in the Seoul area from what I know.
The best advice I can offer is that you get the disks and boot from the cd and run disk utility to find out what the problem is. However, this is from Apple's website on the appearance of a flashing question mark for a G4 iBook:

See "Macintosh: Flashing Question Mark at Startup".
Steps for any other issue that occurs during startup
If an Ethernet cable is connected to your computer, temporarily disconnect it and restart. If you have enabled NetInfo, you may need to temporarily disable it in the Directory Setup application.
You shouldn't remove or rename any of these Mac OS X system files or folders.
Applications (a visible folder)
automount (an invisible folder)
Library (a visible folder)
mach_kernel (an invisible file)
System (a visible folder)
Users (a visible folder)

Now from what I recall you were just asking last week about hooking up your internet here and you would be using an ethernet cable instead of the wireless you wanted since you didn't get a wireless modem. So that could very well be the issue. Even if this fixes your problem, and I hope it does, you need to act with all haste to get your install disks here and keep them in a safe place. In seven years of Mac ownership I've only ever needed the install cd five or six times, but I always have them with me. Goodluck.

If you didn't resolve the issue by now, take it to the Apple Store at Coex... those guys have been pretty helpful both times I've taken things there for a friend. The repairs were cheaper than what they would have been back in the states, too. (ipod, ibook) |
