Funny, it seems to have disappeared. I heard it die when the Swiss kicked that second, legitimate goal through the pipes. Nothing in the apartment. Nothing on the streets. No annoying cars honking it either. It was priceless seeing the looks of the newscasters right after the game...a combination of being pissed and about ready to cry...Classic.Ahhh, back to normal...

Seriously, the Koreans are really delusional if they believed that they were going to get far in the tournament. They scored a grand total of 3 goals(2 in the second half against a shorthanded Togo squad that barely made the tournament). Look at the games: Togo dominated Korea in the first half of that game. Got rocked in the second half because of the red card. Nevertheless, I give Togo credit because they were tough.

France...the French dominated this game. They had that second goal but of course the Koreans say, "Well, that them's the breaks". But if the situation were reversed the public here would be insane and that incident would rank right up their with Ohno, the Tank Incident and the SBS scandal in the Korean hall of insecurity. Korea gets a hacked goal in the 81st minute, I believe. France had many opportunities to KO Korea but let them hang around and the result was a tie...which the Koreans celebrated profusely. Yes, it was a tie. You didn't win. Yet, you chant ad naseum...

Then, karma strikes....even though the call was controversial and the Koreans have been bitching about it, it was correct. Nevertheless, Korea lays an egg against the Swiss...2-0. They were dominated although they did play better in this one than they did against the French. Then, French knocks down Togo and the karmic cycle is complete. 2002 they used the crowd and got a ridiculous amount of breaks and now in 2006 they don't even make the round of 16. Poetic justice. Of course, I'm sure that they think they are some sort of "Champion" since they like to throw that term around pretty liberally here. Just like their brilliant mathematical acuity in thinking that finishing in 4th place(behind Turkey...yes, Turkey) is somehow akin to being a champion. Tsk-tsk.

Of course, now it will be 4 more years before the inundation continues. By then, I will be gone from Korea and won't have to hear all the arrogant nonsense that comes from something as trivial as a damn soccer game. Of course now we will have to live with MBCESPN showing highlights of their glorious victory over little Togo until the end of time. I'm sure that they'll package that with the Italy and Spain games of 2002 and make a greatest hits package. Of course, the France and Switzerland games will never be seen again...I hoped that you taped them.

I was in the park today, nice to see it almost deserted. peace and quiet, Koreans all sleeping off the game. Sweet.

Technically Togo didn't barely qualify. They finished first among African teams. No need to gloat about Korea falling on it's face though. The peace and quiet is welcomed though.

That initial loss to a great ghanaian side in the friendlies was warning enough for the koreans that they didn't have what it takes.

Funny how that game is totally overlooked. Ghana played well that day.

Totally true. I knew they weren't going very far when they got destroyed by Ghana. Their coach said everything was bad and nothing was good. Not exactly encouraging words on the eve of the world cup. Sure would have been nice to see that game. They'll never replay that debacle again though. Togo however....poor Togo...

I actually feel kind of bad for Koreans that it's over. They never really have anything else to cheer about as a country. As least this gave them a chance t o be excited and cut loose for a bit, and to care about something...
