Just wondering what you all have experienced while talking to your Korean friends, students, BF's, GF's, etc.

Recently I was with one of my students and looking at some pictures she was showing me. Like most Korean photos, she was in every picture. There were a few where she was acting like a model and I told her so.

Now, my exact words were "You look like you're modeling." Of course, back home this would be innocent banter meant to show that I was actually interested in the pics instead of being bored, as I of course, was.

The thing is, she misunderstood and thought I said something like "You look like a model" to which she replied "Oh...Thank you." Now she seems to think I have a crush on her and won't leave me alone.

So I'm wondering if any of you have had similar misunderstandings and what the consequences were.

Yeah, that comes up now and then again.

One of my personal all-time favorites was back during my first contract in 1996-1997 when BILL CLINTON was the U.S. President.

One of my students told me that he wanted to talk about the presidential erection.. over and over.. and I kept saying 'what do you mean exactly?' and he kept saying 'you don't know about the presidential erection??' and it took a good 10-15 minutes of classtime with all of the students involved until I realized it was 'presidential election'!

Haha, this is a funny thread...

Hey Prince1900, well I can't say that having a nice young lady not leaving me alone is necessarily a bad thing Smile , unless that goes past your teacher-student ethics... Otherwise man I can't wait to be back overseas again...

Hey Tiger, well as far as that phrase, had it been 1998 or beyond then I think "presidential erection" would have had an extensive meaning... I'm just glad you stopped using that man's avatar, though Cool ...

my favorite one happened earlier in the year....this really cute girl in one of my classes, she's a bright girl and a delight to teach, asked me one day if I like "p*$$y"....."teacher, do you like p@$$y?" well....this isn't the place to talk about that....blah blah blah....all the time thinking..."what the f#*#)?"

turns out she was asking me if I "like Bush (Bushie)."
