It just happened to me at Paris Baguette. The cashier never acknowledged me in any way, she just pointed at the total on the register. Does it bother you when someone here does this? |

Usually, yeah. I know there are worse things to worry about, but still it gets to me. Actually... no, there aren't worse things to worry about. Maybe that's the problem. I need to like quit my job or cut off my leg so I can worry about more important things than rude cashiers. |

I know its a petty thing to complain about. Usually I feel like asking them the total, or saying the total, just to surprise them maybe, but I usually keep my mouth shut, since there's really no point to saying anything |

Yes, it does.
Very annoying also is when someone says the total very, very quietly (beyond human hearing)...so you ask "what?" in Korean and they don't repeat it, they just lazily, with a sigh, turn the display around or point to the numbers. I told an Emart woman off actually and she just smiled inanely. Total mongs some of them. |

Yeah this sort of thing doesn't happen just at a cash register, though. I've noticed that if I ever don't understand what a Korean person says, whether it's in English or Korean, there's almost no chance at all that they'll repeat it for me. Drives me crazy when my students do it. They mumble an answer to a question, I ask them to repeat, and they turn into stone walls.
I've found two ways that often work, though, for getting a repeated price.
- 네?
- 뭐라고요?
The first one is better, and it needs to be said like you're a bit annoyed. Like an ajeoshi. |

Believe me, I understand your frustration, but this is ultimately counterproductive and just makes you look like an a-hole.
Just explain to her in your best, polite Korean that you didn't hear her the first time, could she please say it again.
Although you are taking it as an insult to your intelligence and Korean ability, she really doesn't mean you any harm. She thinks she's doing you a favor because she can't wrap her head around the fact that a whitey might be capable of learning her language. Right or wrong, it's about the most common assumption there is around here, and it's up to you to disprove it.
If you can do so with class and dignity, it really will make your life easier. |

I agree with son dureo though it can be tough at times to be polite about this, it is in the end worth it so that the offender doesn't end up thinking all foriegners are pricks. |

what gets old is having it happen all the time. It also gets annoying when I ask for the total in Korean, and then they point to the screen. |

Yeah but a lot of times they don't speak English. |

I can't see how it could ever bother me if some stranger taking my money for groceries in a foreign country expresses the price in words or by gesturing to a computer screen.
I just want to pay for my junk and go. There are many places for a cultural exchange, e-mart is not one of them.
If something does bother me -- like a Korean cutting in front of me in line at the last second and the cashier starts ringing them up knowing that they just cut, I just walk out of the store. |

Now there's a sure fire way to get your business ahead in the competitive world of korean grocery stores! How about that as a slogan: We don't care if you walk out, less money for us, more money for another store! |
