FIFA blocks angry e-mails from South Koreans
FIFA blocked incoming e-mail from South Korea to its Web site because of a flood of angry messages from fans after the 2002 semifinalists went out in the first round of the World Cup.

Korean newspaper Joong-Ang Daily reported that 4.2 million Koreans bombarded fifa.com after one particularly disgruntled fan organized a petition suggesting FIFA would have to replay the Switzerland-South Korea match if 5 million people complained.
The newspaper noted that FIFA president Sepp Blatter came from Switzerland.

FIFA's new media department "detected this organized attack coming from Korea and, basically, had to block the messages from Korea to fifa.com to protect the Web site," FIFA spokesman Pekka Odriozola said Sunday. "It was the FIFA site involved -- the World Cup Web site was OK."

God, it's just a game. Can't they lose and just suck it up? Why is that so hard to do? Do other countries behave this way? I'm not into soccer, but is this common behavior? I wonder what the messages contain. I know Ohno received death threats. I'll bet anything the FIFA head got some, too. Hopefully it'll blow over. It's a shame that a fun international sporting event has to come to this.

After the 2002 World Cup loss to Korea, Ahn Jung-Hwan was sacked by his Italian club because he scored the winning goal against the Italians.

It's not just a Korean thing at all, no matter how many posters here would like to depict otherwise. Koreans definitely have a hard time letting injustices (real or imagined) go, but its hardly a unique trait. Just mention the underarm incident to any New Zealander, for God's sake.

God, that's lame. I just don't get fanaticism. What was that fight between the British and German fans about? I heard they aren't even playing each other. Still- 4.2 million people slamming a website still seems pretty extreme to me. But hey, that's just my opinion vs. 4.2 million.

The world would be a much better place without fanatics, IMO.

The Perugia chairman sacked him in a publicity stunt, and then attempted to resign him, offering apoloigies.

Its probably more like 1000 people slamming the website 4000 times each.....seriously, people around here tend to equate the actions of 20-something PC Bang obsessed males with the whole country. My GF hasn't mentioned the offside or handballs once, and she was right into the WC. Imagine Korea consisting of different people with different personalities, huh?

I understand why the Koreans are upset. However, they need to be a little more understanding considering the "gift" they received against the France game. Go figure... Laughing

How 'bout this one? Seems like someone was thinking about bombing the Swiss embassy. More evidence that fanaticism sucks. All over a game. Unbelieveable. Evil or Very Mad

And in other news, a Welshman cut of his *beep* because of a game of rugby. Do these isolated examples serve a point of some kind?

EDIT: I can't believe test-icles is censored on here. It's an anatomical term! Confused

Italians have a reputation as hot-headed, irrational, nationalistic, xenophobic, homogenous, and to some degree racist.

See any similarities? Wink Laughing

Nevermind that Advocaat (the [sacked] Korean coach) now agrees the correct call was made on the "offsides" play:

This should resolve this situation:
