Gullible- too willing to believe or accept what other people tell you and therefore easily tricked.
(Wow, it is in the dictionary!)

Time and time again Ive been confronted with instances of Koreans being extremely gullible. Now, Im not talking about 100% of the Hankuk saram, but a good majority of them lack an adequate B.S. detector.

The latest instance is the rumor that someone started, immediately following the Swiss-Korea game, that if 5 million (or 50 million- differing stories and embellishments) complaints were logged to FIFA.com, then it would force a rematch of the game. This resulted in FIFA blocking their website to all of Korea.
Well, this rumor does not seem to have a long life span, but a lot of people were sucked in by it pretty quickly.

This makes me think of all the other situations where I thought Whoa, these people will believe anything!. Most importantly, they seem to believe anything that is reported to them by the media, told to them by a family member or friend, or told to them by a teacher.

Some shining examples:

-Numero Uno: Fan Death! They believe it, no questions asked. They all say We saw doctors on TV and read it in the newspaper. It is an undeniable truth.
-Kimchi prevents SARS, AIDS, etc.
-They believe that Koreans are the only ones who give their seats up for the elderly.
-They are told and truly believe that Koreans are more moral than Westerners.
-They are told and believe that all Korean girls are innocent virgins and that Western guys are here to sully them.
-They have been routinely told that Koreas prostitution problems only exist around American Army bases.
-When the 2 schoolgirls were accidentally killed by the US Army vehicle, some jerks on the Net and at anti-American rallies said that the US Army killed those girls on purpose. I heard that from many students. I even heard a few say that they were told the vehicle stopped, backed up, and ran over them again. Ludicrous!
-Last year, when the big anti-MacArthur statue in Incheon protests were going on, the protestors seized on a completely false story that upon retaking Seoul in 1950, General Mac instructed US soldiers that they would have 3 days free to rape Korean women as they wish. This was a complete lie. Actually, a couple of researchers, with their heads screwed on straight, looked into this story. They found it to be a total fabrication that originated in North Korean propaganda. It was trumpeted as truth by a well known NK supporting professor here in the South.
-Last World Cup, when Korea was knocked out by Germany, one radio reporter had received a text message(from her hair dresser, of all people) that Germany had been disqualified for doping and that meant that Korea would go to the finals. Without checking first, she immediately went on air and reported it. The rumor spread like wild fire. In the end, she got fired for being an idiot.

I could go on and on, but these are some big examples of Korean gullibility. I believe that some of the biggest abusers of this gullibility are school teachers. Ask any Korean friend and they will tell you of woefully ignorant and nationalistic things told to them by their teachers.

Weve got the Korean Teachers Union spreading lies that all foreigners in Korea are immoral and unqualified to teach. Theyre doing it because they know most people will believe it.

Anyway, I blame Confucianism- dont question, just follow!

But the fun didn't stop there. These people also reported that after the killing was good and finished, the drivers went back to their base and high-fived each other and partied down with the rest of the base.

In fact, all the base soldiers immediately, that day, took up a collection out of their own pockets for the girls' families, held a memorial service on the base, sent a delegation immediately to console the families, apologize and discuss some form of compensation. The drivers who ran over the girls almost had nervous breakdowns over their deaths.

The Korean media conveniently left out these facts and instead stirred their xenophobic racist shit. Better all foreigners look like gleeful child murderers, right?

And we wonder why it's so hard to get foreign newspapers in this country.

If only there was a site that documented all the strange thing that westerners believe. Maybe if you go over to http://www.snopes.com you'll see how foolproof us westerners are.

Uh-oh dude. Looks like they're giving you a hard time. I'll back you up on a few of these.

Just about every ajumma class I had ever taught in my first 3 years here told me this.

Benicio wrote:

Students of all ages told me about the SARS prevention powers of Kimchi, but I've never heard of the AIDS prevention powers of kimchi.

Benicio wrote:

Never heard this one.
Benicio wrote:

You hear this a tiny bit, but usually from dumb-dumbs.
Benicio wrote:

You hear this from the same kind of dumb-dumbs. What I've heard more commonly is that Korean girls are more moral compared to Japanese girls. Ask a male student who has been to Japan what he thinks of Japanese girls, and you'll stand a good chance of hearing something like this IME.
Benicio wrote:

I actually read this in an editorial in the Korean Herald, I think back in 2002. (It wasn't Cho Se Hyun's editorial, and I believe he ripped that editorial writer a new one in his following column). I have heard from female students who were shocked that these places exist in Korea FAR from US Bases too. One of my free talkers stumbled upon an area once, and she was like 'but there's no base here!"

I heard this garbage all over the place in 2002. Even my EX-GF was trying to pass this BS off on me. She had heard it from other Korean students who were studying over in China with her.

A funny side note, they all knew she was dating a foreigner, because I dropped her off in China and met a lot of the other students. She hung out with some dudes who were always raggin' on Americans. I told her to tell them I was Canadian. Pretty soon, she was hearing about how "Canadian soldiers would kill babies in the Korean War, etc. etc." That taught her a valuable life lesson anyway.

No one has told me this, but I read about the professor talking that crap.

Never heard that one, but it's a funny story.

One time a Korean guy was berating me on Korea vs. Canada, asking me things like "How many ____________s does Canada have? Korea has X ____________s." I soon grew weary of the exchange when he asked "How many mountains does Canada have?" I told him we had seven mountains. The guy's face lit up, and he stopped asking me stupid questions because Korea won. To this day, I'm sure he's telling this 'fact' to others.

Yeah, we have our share of gullible dumb-dumbs too. Excuse me while I e-mail my friend, who happens to be the son of a Nigerian cabinet minister. I'm just gonna wire him some money, then I'm gonna hit it big!! Bling-bling Mo'fo's!!

Do I really need to point out the stupid things Americans and Canadians believe? I don't know about the Aussies, Brits or South Africans, but I bet they have many stupid things too.

BTW, this is your first post?

Lots of not so insightful insight + only one post on Dave's + a slightly instigating topic + a "Hey guys, ain't those Koreans wacky!?" tone to innocently and wide-eyed avoid accusations of racism + a joined date less than one month old =

A TROLL

But it also equals a prompt from which a worthwhile dialog may arise, if nobody takes the bait. Good stuff. Game on.

The flaming has begun.
Some have already surmised that I have no "real" Korean friends, that I only get my info from Internet snippets, and/or I'm a troll.
I won't bother responding to the first two accusations.
The 3rd: I'm a troll. Well, a troll for what? I'm not sure what I would be trolling for.
I'm a long time reader, but have just recently posted for the first time.
I was an active member of the Pusan Web forums, but they have just deteriorated into drivel.
I you think of my post as drivel, fine.

I was just making an observation about the numerous instances where I've seen that a lot of Koreans are so easily taken in. If those Nigerian money scammers could write in Korean, I'm sure they would make a killing here.

As for gullibility of other nations and peoples, I well remember believing that you couldn't go swimming for an hour after eating and that handling frogs could give you warts. Yes, I feel like a right fool for believing them, but I was a kid at the time. I've since grown a healthy level of skepticism which I feel Koreans generally lack.

Anyway, I rather enjoyed the snopes.com sight about myths and urban legends!

Yeah, but in my experience it's generally ADULTS who tell kids that kind of stuff. The thing about not swimming after eating was included in my cub scout manual, IIRC.

Correct.

I'm not going to insult you, OP, but all the things you list are utter clichedom that - as Billy implies - are heard solely via expats on the internet, rarely if ever from Koreans.

Gets tiresome.

Of course, we all remember the biggest whopper of all:

Pop Rocks & Cola

Every kid I knew swore that you would die if you ingested both.

We all have had friends send us that retarded "Bill Gates is testing an E-mail tracker and will send 300+ dollars to you and everyone you send this too". That was extremely annoying!

With a lot of Koreans, there just doesn't seem to be any hint of doubt when it comes to some of these things.

You remember that "specially" designed hula hoop that was supposed to greatly assist weight loss? It sold like crazy here. Why? Because they had "doctors" attest to its effectiveness.
Funny how all the foreigners knew it was nothing more than a hula hoop.

Just a question for a couple of you who pointed out that this was my first post- because this thread is my first post, does that automatically make me a fake? a troll? less valid? a noob? not cool like you? an easy target for flaming?
