Australia was ripped off on the PK call, no doubt about it. They played their asses off for 90+ minutes and should have been headed to a shootout.

The foul that was called was clearly the result of the Italian striker tripping over the extended--and by that point immobile--body of the Australian fullback. It wasn't purposeful on either's part. The challenge was legitimate and the fall could have been avoided, although it wasn't the usual overacted dive, I must say. The ref should have called play on like he had throughout the match. What a ripoff, not only to the Aussies, but to fans watching worldwide. The Italians are no doubt aware that they lucked out having Totti get that PK goal.

How deflating, having watched the game for the last two hours...and I didn't honestly care who won. Rolling Eyes

No two ways about it.....we were robbed, fair and square. Ref is an absolute joke. I daresay his 2006 World Cup reffing days are over.

Italy didn't deserve to win that.

Me too. I like both teams so I didn't care about who was going to win but that was such a bleh ending for a good game.

Bleh.

It's not a pity they lost, it's a pity they lost in that way.

However, that's all part of the drama of the WC and the Aussies got their first taste of it. Besides, they were up a man for 40 minutes of the game and couldn't penetrate the Italian defense; Italy was the better team, but the way they won was disgraceful. And before anyone starts yelling at me, the Socceroos might have lost, but they looked amazing on the field. They have a lot to be proud of.

And perhaps there is some divine justice in this world. Italy was knocked out the last WC by Korea because of ref mistakes and that team was coached by the same Hiddink.

Again, Aussies, you played very well. Be proud.

The red card was a bit harsh as well.

I suppose both things balanced themselves out in the end.

Referee deserves a bullet. I'm absolutely devastated the game ended that way.

Shocked

Um yeah, cause a player getting sent off really balances out a dubious game-winning penalty kick, doesnt it. Shocked

There was a grim inevitability of a late italian goal (quite possibly involving cheating the ref). Aussies should have killed the game much earlier while they had the chance, they showed too much respect. It reminded me of england's quarter final lose to brazil in 2002.

It can do if you have the skill to take advantage of it.

Try explaining that to Lucas Neill, bet he'd love to hear it right now. Rolling Eyes

I am sure Materazzi would have an opinion as well.

I do admire the style in which Australia played in the tournament though. It was physical but it was fair and inventive. It is something they can be proud of and build on.

Fact is we couldn't score despite playing with an extra man for so long. Lets not get Korean about this, crap happens and we have exceeded most expectations for this tournament. Australia is now the future of football in Asia and not a team to be taken lightly. Yes, I am gutted too, but there are many many positives to be taken from the last few weeks. Very Happy

Dude, totally agree....but I think we have more of a reason to be upset than what the Koreans did....and I also strongly believe we coulda won via penalty shoot out....anyway, I digress....Socceroos played like absolute champions and its all we can ask for after 30 odd years out of the spotlight.

It was a cheap win by the Italians. Kudos to Australia. Here's hoping Italy meets Oz in the Rugby World Cup.

I guess some bad calls are part of the game. And, sometimes really bad calls are part of the game. Rolling Eyes
