L.A. also stands for Losers Abound. The number of homeless I saw there was just staggering, and that of people doing absolutely nothing with their lives was even bigger.

The community college scene is rife with rich kids from abroad who know they can f!ck around as much as they want, since everyone else is doing so. Work ethic and motivation are apparently absent unless you're in the entertainment or real estate industries.

Even the outlying areas are just downright boring. My cousins live in Anaheim Hills, about an hour away, and it was like ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ. So much for the Californian "dream." Don't even get me started about how illegal immigration is driving that state to the ground.

California in general, and Southern California in specific, was a lot better back in the 1970s, before a massive influx of immigrants, legal and illegal, nearly doubled the population.

Not that you were around to appreciate it, hmm....

Granted, every city has its weirdos, but dude, Los Angeles has to be hands down the "waste your life" capital of the United States.

Funny thing is, Vegas is a magnet for Angelenos on holidays and weekends, but most say they couldn't live there. I've heard most peeps in Vegas gamble quite a bit.

actually, most people that live there don't gamble very often, unless they're addicted. and Vegas actually attracts more European vacationers than American vacationers. most people in Vegas hate it because there is nothing to do there but gamble and drink. granted there are a few places to go hiking, etc., it's a bit hard to do that when it's 120F outside.

In Chicago, most of the community colleges are filled with people who aren't smart enough and / or can't afford to attend a university.

Illegal immigration has definitely brought things down a few notches but one of the things I enjoyed about growing up in L.A. was growing up with kids from cultures and countries all around the globe. We had white, black, Hispanic, Korean, Chinese, Japanese, Vietnamese, Thai, Laotian, western European, eastern European, Russian, Indian, middle eastern, Israeli, Pacific Islanders, you name it. My honors classes were like little U.N. meetings. And all of that in a beach city. HMO and DMV materials are printed in like 30-50 different languages.

I also read that L.A. has the largest Korean population of any city outside of Korea, so I'll get to use the Korean I learn even when I go back home. Smile

Los Angeles.

Mixed feelings on the place.

Pluses: Climate.. large groups of people from every country on earth.. beaches..

I like the massive Asian areas actually.. like the blocks and blocks of nothing but Vietnamese signs and businesses.. or Korean ones.. etc. Stuff like that. Just pure all-out massive neighborhoods of it.

Long Beach has all the Cambodians.. kinda cool.. although its kinda mixed with El Salvadorean or something.. and kind of run down in that area.

Sometimes I think I wouldn't mind giving that city a shot.. other times.. nah, wouldn't want to deal with all the driving.

Regarding Las Vegas.. I've spent more time in that city. Yeah, basically gambling and drinking. Not much else happening. The constant slot machine sounds kinda get to me after awhile - and they are everywhere. I do like the fact things are so new there (housing-wise).. and the city is relatively small and easy to get around (compared to Las Angeles).

Speaking of Las Vegas.. anyone notice that these days quite a few of the blackjack dealers are asian women now.. (wasn't like that before).. the pit bosses are always guys.. but many card dealers are asian women these days.

Thing is, Vegas is one of the top five fastest growing cities in the United States. Many Koreans from Los Angeles are moving over there as housing prices in Vegas are much lower than those of Lala land. I once spoke to a woman on a flight who said she was a hostess at a Vegas restaurant, and she said finding a decent boyfriend or girlfriend is really tough there.

That said, Vegas I hear no longer has the cheap buffets but does have good Chinese food.

I have a very low tolerance for idiocy these days.

1. What the frick can you NOT do in LA that you CAN do in any other place?

2. To wit: Let me see, from where I lived about an hour East of LA (No, not LA, but wait...) I could do ANY of the following within 2 hours: Got to LA and see world class theater and music, go to the mountains to hike/ski/sled, be in Mexico, go to Disnelyland or any of the other theme parks, be at Sea World, be at the Wild Animal Park, visit world-class museums, eat any kind of food you could imagine, be in La jolla or one of many other beaches... Go surfing in the morning, skiing at night...

Etc., etc.

3. What better place to be homeless??? YA THINK MAYBE some homeless folks migrate to warmer climes? (Rhetorical: yes, they do.)

4. The *outlying* areas are boring?? They called *suburbs*. That's where you put the *houses*, not the night clubs. Doh!!!

I'm not a huge fan of LA proper, nor of the various ills of that or ANY city... but the crap you are spewing is stupid tripe. Driving in LA is as bad as in Seoul? Then you've never driven in Seoul. Ever.

If you were living in cardboard box you'd prefer Venice to Chicago, too. The weather is one of the best things about living in soCal. I was just looking over my supplies for the move to Korea and having separate wardrobes for different times of the year is a phenomenal waste of both money and time. Here in southern Arizona I have to check the clock and the calendar before I can even step outside for something as simple as going on a short run. Weather should be simple and pleasureable, or maybe interesting, but not something that's a money- and time-sucking hinderance and annoyance. Too much time and bother. If I have to put on a sweatshirt at Disneyland in the evenings, that's winter. Snow is for playing in, not living in.
