And I'm not taking the anti-Korea piss. I have always thought it is the most deep, haunting, surreal anthem there is.

Agreed, it has a haunting, powerful feel to it. I always used to like hearing it at traffic lights whenever I visited Japan.

But the USSR's (even though they're not in the WC; bummer; maybe in 2010) nat'l anthem is the coolest, I'd say. It's like the Imperial March from Star Wars (I may have just stolen that comparison from a popular writer; I'm not sure).

I liked the Soviet anthem too. I also like France's La Marseillaise.

Sweden has the nicest sounding national anthem so far at the world cup.
I suppose its to be expected with talent like Abba. Wink

The words are also very nice:
Quote:
Du gamla, Du fria, Du fjllhga nord,
Du tysta, Du gldjerika skna!
Jag hlsar Dig, vnaste land upp jord,
Din sol, Din himmel, Dina ngder grna.

Du tronar p minnen frn fornstora dar,
d rat Ditt namn flg ver jorden.
Jag vet att Du r och frblir vad du var.
Ja, jag vill leva jag vill d i Norden.

English translation:
Quote:
You old, you free, you mountainous North,
You silent, you joyful beauty!
I greet you, the friendliest land on earth,
Your sun, your sky, your meadows green.

You throne on memories from ancient days,
When honored your name flew over the earth.
I know that you are and remain what you were,
Yes, I want to live, I want to die in the North.

I fell in love with this anthem while I lived in Sweden. The Soviet and French anthems are much grander, but the Swedish one is the most beautiful and fits Sweden's character perfectly.

God Save the Queen is the anthem of the United Kingdom. Period. If England, as a region of the UK, opts to use it as its football anthem then it is taking license. It is also detrimental to national (UK) unity, as it associates the anthem in Scottish minds with England. England should cease and desist from using the UK anthem as 'England's.' If they want the UK to break up then they can keep it. But they should get their own football anthem.

What would happen if Scotland and England played in the World Cup? Would they just play it once, or play the same anthem twice. "Sorry England, it is Scotland's turn to enjoy it."

A few months ago England played Northern Ireland and both teams sang God Save the Queen. A bit bizarre. Each component of the UK should get its own anthem, and leave God Save the Queen for pan-UK events.

This is an innocent question: Why do England, Scotland, Wales (and No. Ireland?) get to enter the World Cup separately?

I'd go with the Soviet anthem as well although I like South Africa's and 'Advance Australia Fair' (not sure if it's the national anthem but it was rousingly sung at every Anzac day I remember)

Not entirely sure. It's always been that way, though at the Olympics we do just have a UK team.

Virtually every sport has a different combination of UK countries. It's mysterious place.

Never figured out this: Why an "Ireland" rugby team, but separate Northern ireland and Rep. ireland soccer teams? is it coz the fans would've been too hard to control? or is it because Rugby in ireland evolved from Protestant roots? Hmm.

And..what anthem do they play when the rugby team plays?..and, do they play God save the queen when N.ireland plays?

I honestly think that "The Star-Spangled Banner" is the best national anthem. It's just an opinion.

It actually brings tears to my eyes when I hear it.
