MacDonalds have for the duration of the world cup introduced the 'Bigger' Big Mac. It claims to be 40% bigger than the original Big Mac. I read somewhere that it contains the same amount of calories as three mars bars.
MacDonalds are ditching the emphasis on 'healthy' options and going back to their basic bestsellers, burgers and nuggets.
What do you reckon is would be worse for your health eating a few of these burgers a week or smoking 5-10 ciggies a day? Imagine seeing some nicely clogged artery before ripping open your Bigger Big Mac. Would love to see it happen, but i guess we've got a long way to go. |

Not sure why people would want to eat a McD's burger when they could have a Wendy's, A&W, or Arby's burger. McD's is the bottom of the fast food barrel.
But, no it's never gonna happen.

Wait a second, Pegpig. Your (understandable) disdain may be clouding your judgement.
These chains, for example, are far closer to the bottom of the fast food barrel:
Personally, I would be happy to see health warnings displayed upon fast food packaging. Granted, it may not do much good, nor is it likely to occur soon, but nonetheless it would be an interesting addition. |

| You're right. I had forgotten about Lotteria's burgers. Probably with good reason. Never had a Jack-in-the-box. (burger I mean) |

Lotteria is better than McDonald's. In a pinch, I'll eat a Lotteria burger, but I still can't bring myself to visit a McDonald's. The last time I did, about two years ago, I almost vomited after eating.
And I give a big thumbs down to warning labels on things that are obviously detrimental to one's health. It's a bit obvious, isn't it? And, it would mar the pretty package design. |

If you haven't already seen it, watch "Supersize Me". A film maker eats nothing but MacDonlads for a month and nearly dies from it. Its a real eye-opener to how bad McD's really is for you.

Two words. Nanny state.
People have the right to do, eat or smoke whatever they please, without the interference of some uptight health bashers.
Sure it makes some people fat- Sure it kills people's arteries- But what do you care? You're not them.
Get over it. |

Does the mother of a retarded child allow him to bash his head against the wall all day long? |

I agree you have the right do these things, but that does not free you from all responsibility. Think about the obese people on disability. Think about the amount of tax dollars spent on these people. They have the government foot the bill for their health issues that result from this unhealthy diet. As a taxpayer it does effect you. Maybe they should tax unhealthy food chains as much as they tax beer and cigarettes. Either way the OP has a valid point. You have the right to do whatever you want as long as it doesn't infinge on me or someone else's rights.
Why should I have to foot the bill for someone else's poor descicions?
Why punish tobacco company's for making an unhealthy product when fast food chains are creating an equally dangerous product?
Obviously you should punish both.

That's questionable when you see a 250kg person who can't walk up a flight of stairs. Yet they eat MacDonalds and put back 2 litres of Coke everyday. Retarded? No. But they have some serious problems and could benefit from controls on the poison that is killing them. |

That retarded child analogy might be the worst anaolgy I have ever seen here on Dave's...and that's bad. I don't think smoking and eating fast food are very comparable. First, fast food gets a bad wrap. You could easily consume just as many calories and as much fat at any restaurant (probably more) or at home, for that matter. How many calories do you think a "set menu" has with some cut of meat, a potato with cheese, butter, and sour cream, a cream soup and a Coke with refills? As for that hypothetical guy that weighs 250k and is eating at McD's, do you think if it weren't for fast food he would go home and eat yogurt and salad instead? Store-bought food is no better if you don't deliberately decide to buy healthier foods. Look at all the instant or microwavable foods. Groceries and restaurant food already come with warnings-nutritional information. Restaurants are required to provide this info. That is warning enough.
Fast food and smoking are in different leagues. People need to eat food, but smoking is completely unnecessary. Also, I don't believe people become chemically addicted to food as they do to nicotine. |

One is the immediate effect. Fast food doesn't hurt other people around them (though a massive fart might be disruptive) but smoking physically harms others around them.
Second, you can eat a hamburger and a small fry and not be to far over what people would eat at home.
Third, what about a mom and pop diner? A hot chicken sandwich with fries all covered in gravy ain't much better also many so called "health" foods nowadays aren't healthy at all.
I could go on, but the health care argument isn't strong enough for a tax to be implemented. |

Supersize me took it to the extreme. What about the person who lost 37 pounds in 90 days only eating at Mcdonalds. I agree that Mcdonalds is the bottom of the barrel as far as food quality goes. Although, they are offering salads, chicken breast and brown/wheat bread and other healthy alternatives in North America. There is nothing wrong with fast food occasionally.
RALEIGH, N.C. Aug 11, 2005 (AP) Inspired by the documentary "Super Size Me," Merab Morgan decided to give a fast-food-only diet a try. The construction worker and mother of two ate only at McDonald's for 90 days and dropped 37 pounds in the process.

| Put on the list sugary, carbonated sodas. Dental problems occur in children. Mexicans drink Coke and Pepsi, generally, before they drink their own water. People become addicted to the stuff and is a cause of insomnia. Americans used to be pretty healthy until the soda jerk came along in the 50's. |
