Trust me, my English is far superior to 80% of the people here (atleast). I was writing university level essays back in grade 10 and all my university scholarships were for English essay writing (funny as I studied Computer Science with English writing scholarships ) I was actually the person everyone in computer science came to to proof read things unless they had an artsy girlfriend (and many cs students didn't have any girlfriend...).
Any who, I ain't na gonna check e'ery un o' me posts for 'em spelling 'stakes. |
Man you're smart. I hope you don't hurt your arm with all that backpatting. |
If it wasn't for arrogant, smug artsy jerks I wouldn't have had to post that. But I have been attacked for helping students with grammar at work before. Many artsy jerks (usually BAs in Sociology) think that because I have a Bachelor of Computer Science, I can't possibly know what I am talking about when it comes to English grammar. I have always proved these arrogant jerks wrong. Still, I have to point out that my English is actually pretty darn good even though I have a Bachelor of Computer Science. |

You were helping? Ridiculous? You may yet receive the Dave's ESL Mother Teresa Humanitarian Award.

Wasn't sure of which forum this should go in, so here it is. This is just a friendly, helpful suggestion to all the English teachers here. |
That is what I put in the OP. I don't know what else I need to put to make it friendly (would you like an emoticon???), but correcting people IS helping people. People incapable of taking constructive criticism will never grow. I very quicky acknowledged my mistake with 'everyday' and 'every day' and thanked the person who corrected me. I wasn't condescending at all in my OP, was I? I didn't put people down for 'rediculous', just pointed it out. |

Another one I just thought of...
Their - There - They're
Their: Is that their suitcase?
There: Look at that hottie over there.
They're: They're (they are) both dating that hottie we saw last night. |

So, you sayin' you don't want any unsolicited help? Confoundin', that is, given the nature of the OP.
Honestly? I thought your original post was sarcastic. Guess not. That makes it all the stranger. |

Yes, it wasn't sarcastic, hard to believe on this board though, isn't it? But I said

I do take unsolicited help and actually welcome it. I don't understand what you mean in your first sentence??? |

Yep, stupid mistake. I was thinking of two friends at the time, but couldn't quite remember what happened to the second one so went back and changed the beginning to just one friend. I missed that though. |

Can I play again? She felt BADLY about it.
Ooops, there go those adverbs...
In mainstream English usage, i.e., not including slang, etc., adverbs are the current major change in English. Start paying attention. It's startling how often they are used incorrect. Ly. |

BUZZER!
Feel is a stative verb. Bad is correct. Badly is wrong.
You look badly?
You seem badly?
As James Brown once said,
I feel good!
I knew that I would.
I feel nice! (not nicely)
But those sense verbs are tricky.
You can carefully feel your way up someone's blouse.
But don't badly feel your way up. She might not feel good about your intentions. (not well) |
