Is it really this dire?
I need to go to Vancouver for 2 weeks in early august & contacted Top Travel -- they've served me pretty well in the past.
Story I got from them is there are virtually no seats available & all they could offer was Incheon - Narita - SF - Vancouver on United for, get this, 2,100,000! Grab it now, they advised. I politely told them to stuff it.
However, I've since emailed Kangsan, Shoestring, & Unique Travel & none of them have bothered to respond.
I'm not too concerned about cost -- its on the school board's nickel (though I could see me supervisor choking on his kimchi over that quote). Surely I can do better.
Suggestions? |

Try e-mailing / calling Cathay or Singapore Air. Routing via Singapore or Hong Kong but usually quite competitive. Biggest problem is that August is PEAK travel time in Korea AND Canada so you get burned from both ends.
EVA also has pretty good deals via Taiwan. |

You can buy a ticket off of Singapore Air's website right now for a base price of 1.472 mil. won= 1,638,300 with tax and charges. Departures are available for Aug. 3, 5, 7, 10, 12, 14, with returns on the 17th, 21st and 24th to choose from. All you need is a credit card, and they'll issue you an e-ticket on the spot.
And no, I'm not an agent. |

I just got a ticket to Vancouver on Korean Air (return) leaving August 4th coming back on September 1st for a total of 1.8 million including taxes. My flight is a direct flight because I am taking my dog home. So, I am sure if you are willing to make at least one stop, you can probably get a better flight. Check www.whypaymore.co.kr for a deal. Give them a call...someone there will speak English. Good luck on finding a flight. |

Cheap flights to North America are a thing of the past.
Accept it. |

Thanks for the input, folks.
An update. I spoke too soon -- Kangsan & Shoestring Travel both got back to me with courteous responses & had put me on waitlists for a number of options.
Heres the dilemma now. I'm not concerned about cost, unless its blatantly unreasonable like Top's quote in my OP, & I'm a fan of comfort & convenience. Direct flights rule. (I would have jumped on Singapore Air's webpage deal but they require a credit card in the passenger's name which I dont have.)
Now Shoestring's gotten back to me with a confirmed deal on Cathay Pacific (which is a bit class, like Singapore Air?) but involving some long flight times & a 2-hr layover in Hongkong. 1.45 million, taxes in.
Do I take it, or take my chances Sing Air or Air Canada might still pan out? What would you do? (My old ma will be crestfallen if I cant get back for a visit.) |

Go for the Cathay Pacific flight, Schwa.
I love, love, love Cathay Pacific. I only fly them to HK and sometimes to the UK if I want a free stopover in HK.
The cabin crew is very well trained. Food is usually really good and the seats are quite big, too, for economy class (but their business class kicks ass!).
You won't be disappointed. If you go to HK, you can bring some goodies back for Letty, too
Heehe, just kidding!! |

I would take it while you can get it.
The price is reasonable and Catahy Pacific are good. I flew with them to Thailand via Hong Kong. Good food, nice staff and entertainment.
