Wow, I am amused at this inflated ego for being Americas "BIGGEST" oil supplier.
Crude Oil Imports
(Thousand Barrels per Day)
Country Apr-06
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
CANADA 1,710
MEXICO 1,601
SAUDI ARABIA 1,582
VENEZUELA 1,171
NIGERIA 1,022
IRAQ 531
ANGOLA 389
ECUADOR 312
ALGERIA 256
Who would have thought that America would get most of it's oil from it's neighbors?Hmm.
What I can't understand is why America pays $2.75 USD a gallon and Canada pays over $8.00 USD a gallon. Now that blows my mind. Why would a Canadian be bragging about where America gets it's oil? |

First of all, who's bragging?
Second of all, $8 a gallon? Who you kidding? Try $3.15USD a gallon |

My mistake. Rather closer to .8 a liter.
Bragging? No one is being inconspicuous about the motive of this post. Don't be so obtuse. |

The motive being what? I started the post because it was interesting how assertive Alberta's becoming. That's where I'm from. |

Sorry mithridates!! I suppose I am defensive tonight for some reason. I made the mistake of sifting through Daves and reading all of the anti-American rhetoric. Not your fault. ;( That and a few cocktails didn't help. |

That's all right. I assume you mean c*cktails?
Only one person here actually believes I'm anti-American but his opinion doesn't count. |

A province that conducts business in your country's dollars, imports your culture voraciously, is friendly to you, legislates itself to complement your laws, sends product to you, desires open trade with you, and which you don't pay to govern? There's no need for costly invasions--sounds like an empire's dream to me!

It's a good point. However these days where oil production is only marginally higher than oil consumption, America could ill afford Canada to send its oil to China. Canada is about the only stable, corruption free democracy on that list.
Also if you add in Canada's total energy exports to the USA, from oil to gas to hydro, Canada would have a major share of the pie. |

I don't know about anyone else, but I spend an inordinate amount of time calculating where natural resources come from. I don't understand people who don't know and don't care where pop corn and bamboo shoots come from. |

Are you joking? Martin and the liberals could have given the maffia a run for their money. And it's going to take a lot to clean up the house. Regardless, a mute point.
Mith, why are oil prices so high if Canada has so much to export? Is it as simple as supply and demand? Too much demand in the world. Why then does the price of oil go up with the instability in the middle East? Canada couldn't make up the lack?
BTW...Have you heard that their surplus is projected to be 19 billion next year.
Also, did you read that the Washington Post's editorial on its support for off shore drilling. A major shift from greenpeace's stance on off shore drilling.

I don't recall any elections being stolen in Canada or the cost of bribes being the cost of doing business in Canada. Of course there is corruption to be found in all governments. We're talking a relative sense:

fiveeagles, the reason gas is so expensive in Canada is because of taxes we impose on it GST, PST and various gas taxes. Also the oil in Alberta is not bubbling out of the ground, it is trapped in sand and needs massive amounts of electricity, water and natural gas to get it out of the sand. It is not profitable to removce the oil unless it is more than 50$ a barrel, so the higher the prices the more oil that will be brought online. Of course with Enbridge building its Gateway pipeline to the west coast soon China/India/Japan/Korea will be getting into the Alberta game. |
