News: Bush to Iran: "You had me at 'homophobia.'"
By Michael Beckel
July/August 2006 Issue
Oh sure, its a card-carrying, nuke-craving, extremist-loving member of the Axis of Evil. But Iran is also one of the United States closest allies in the United Nations when it comes to shutting down international agreements the Bush administration doesnt like. A few of our governments recent collaborations with its archnemesis:
January 2006 The U.S. joins with Iran to deny consultative status to two gay rights groups at the U.N.
September 2005 The U.S. and Iran try to water down a U.N. World Summit agreement affirming international responsibility to protect civilians from war crimes and genocide.
March 2003 The U.S. sides with Iran in a failed attempt to delete a condemnation of the use of custom, tradition, or religious consideration to justify violence against women in a declaration by the U.N. Commission on the Status of Women.
May 2002 The U.S. unsuccessfully teams up with Iran to edit out references to birth control and sex ed in a U.N. declaration on the rights of children.
July 2001 The U.S. and Iran are the only countries to object to language in a special U.N. report on children that prohibits the death penalty for crimes committed by minors. |

Is it American Hypocrisy or "Bush" Hypocrisy. If I were you, I wouldn't label EVERY American in the same way you would label Bush. We, just like you, are all different people with different minds and values. By the way, it's nice meeting you. |

You're absolutly right, my American friends are quite nice people and are definitly not crazy nor ignorant like the Bush Crime Family. Just posted the article to show the neo-cons on the board that maybe Iran is not so despicable, at least not to John Bolton. |

I can't say I totally agree with you, but you are correct. "Fix" is a relevent verb to use though. Politics requires the pendulum to swing both ways, and I believe now is a very pronounced time for power to exchange hands. I always remind myself though, did I really want Gore sitting in that seat when it happened. Even my most nauseatingly left seated friends get uncomfortable answering that question. |

Not to go off-topic, but what Gore would have done is largely unknown. This is one case where the devil-we-don't-know looks more attractive, because it is hard to imagine the devil-we-don't-know screwing up so badly. Since the Iraq War is hardly Bush's only mistake, just his most infamous, it is hard not to wish for Gore. |

No No, you are totally justified in that statement. But we all know that Gore was more prone to curl up in fetal position than not. Plus, look at the damn fool now. Even the Dems are embarressed as hell. His whole "global warming" farce is on display. He scares me more than Bush because of his lack of fortitude and consistancy. We are never really surprised by Bush.
No disrespect if you are a Gore supporter. It's all ideology anyway. |

Well, I am. I guess I am an optimist. But still, people are dying and atleast with Gore, despite the waffing, he'd of been a lot better at actually talking with other foreign powers and achieving some real foreign policy goals other than reeking havoc then profit.
But back to the thread. Yes, Iran has some god awful brilliant people in government. Well educated, erudite and with a good command of English. Well traveled, educated abroad and very versed in democracy, govt, diplomacy and communication. Just listening to their foreign minister was a pleasure.
Yet, Bush just wants to never use the backdoor diplomacy, the politeness, the respect and compromise, necessary to achieve goals. He just sets deadlines and vomits on any pronouncement from another government he doesn't 100% agree with. The whole approach of this Admin is the problem.
And then yesterday I read Bush said he didn't know a thing about what was happening in N.Korea. LOL.....

Do you? It is completely closed off. Nobody knows what is going on in that country, Kim Jong Il probably has an incomplete picture himself. |

When the head of state of such a powerful country with all its spy apparatus, advisors, think tanks, satellites says, "I don't know" ..... I suggest he is playing possum.
That is the only intelligent answer. He knows something and it isn't what he'd like to relate, so he says, "I don't know".........creates fear, suspicion and all that other mood altering kind of smoke and mirrors.
That's what I meant by my comment. He knows. Always knows and THAT IS THE PROBLEM. It wasn't a contrite statement, given what we know of the man, it was said to manipulate.

Exactly. Bush does not equal America. Actually he's probably the worst thing that's ever happened to it and millions of Americans would love nothing better than to see him in jail. It's like saying all Chinese love Hu Jintao, another SOB. |

Yup, and a LOT of Iranians are not Jihadist nutjobs in the least. Oh, and they have great eats and a beautiful countryside, too! |
