Shopping for boxers the other day in one of the dept stores

descended upon immediately as happens in these grossly overstaffed businesses, woman yabbering away all i could make out being this almost mantra-like panties, blah blah panties, panties, panties

holds up a few pairs, makes some kind of elaborate demonstration of the fabric - clearly low in cotton, all the while shes going panties, panties...

i must say i like a bit of privacy when i'm doing this kind of thing

Privacy? haha wrong country.

The worst thing you can do is ask for help in a department store. You immediately give all those overstaffed in your face idle shop assistants a reason for existing.

Do as i do. focus. Think only of what you want to buy, and bat away every hawk that descends on you. Shrug off their hard sell and attempts at English, shopping isn't an exercise in international relations. The only time I speak is when I've found what i want ( after bulldozing through he wracks and all the people standing in your way) and then, its to bargain for a discount. Why not? Thats what koreans do.
Talking of embarrasment, nothing fazes me, i've been known to buy tampons for the girlfriend and wave them around the store for everyone to see.

First off, you are shopping in the wrong place. Department stores are WAY over-priced. If you want boxers, go to a 5 day street market. You can get 3 for W10,000. It isn't like you are going to try them on, is it?

Second of all, why are you shopping there? I know this is a repeat of the first paragraph, but I forgot my second point. Sue me.

Okay, since someone's opened the breach (so to speak) I'm going to ask something that I have wondered about from time to time (actually not all that often but since we're on the subject).

Sometimes there are commercials on TV for men's boxers. Now these are not just any boxers but ones with something that dangles in the front. Could someone please enlighten me?

Ok, but how much money do you have? Do you have more in Korea or back home (where should I sue you?). I don't want to go through all the trouble of suing you to find out you are broke. Unless you want to take this to Judge Judy. That could be fun Wink

I still remember my first 'panty' buying experience. The clerk wanted to know if I would be needing an undershirt too. I told her: Just the panties, Ma'am. Then she rambled on in Korean: Panty man? Panty man? I turned red. I later learned the word for 'just' was 'man' in Korean. Here I felt great as the "Panty Man". Smile

I dare you. I double dog dare you.

I would LOVE to see you explain your case to Judge Judy. That would be just before I beat you over the head with a rubber chicken.

Philippines is even worse (or more fun - depending on how you look at it).

They are called "Jockey Girls".. meaning their entire mission is to get you to buy their particular brand of underwear (Jockeys are most popular).. as you are browsing, different saleswomen start trying to sell their particular brand. Each brand/section will have a different salesgirl. The underwear department alone can have close to 10-15 saleswomen in them... and the odd gay guy thrown into the mix.

They got Korea beat by a long-shot down there. Plus they are all rattling off fluent English as opposed to that awkward communication thing we have going on in Korea.

True story: the first time I met my wife's younger brother, he gave me a pair of boxer shorts as a gift.

That sounds like an absolutely terrific way to meet women.

Did anyone ever think that it's great how many people work in department stores? A lot of people are making a living off of the business, and the head company is sharing it with more employees. Don't you think it's wrong having giant box stores where there's one employee per city-block-sized section?

If the wages would be appropriate i would agree. What would be best, paying one employee 2.000.000 won per month or paying 10 employees 200.000 won per month?

You tell me

I would prefer a department store where the CEO gets $100,000 a year instead of $10,000,000, and the difference is spent on more staff. Only my dream.

I think this thread would be more fun if it was "On the panties of subjects". Cool
