Anybody out there care about le tour?
If you do, how are you going to follow it?
Who do you think will win?
Can Basso do the Giro/Tour double?
Or will Ullrich get back to the top step again?

I love the TdF. One of the most amazing things to do is to win this race. Physically there isnt a single more physically demanding test in modern sports today. Can Basso do it? Its between him and Ullrich and Jan I think may be better suited for it being a better time trialer than basso. Plus, Basso may have trouble peaking again so soon after the Giro. But who knows. Id still bet on Ullrich though. He is more in the style of Indurain and Armstrong: very good climbers and superb time trialers. And I think its the time trials that will again be decisive.

Sorry but this is just following the party line, the trite phrase......

MANY, MANY more physically demanding tests/races out there. Much harder than sitting on your fat ass being fed continuously and getting injections after each hard effort. Not to degrade it, it isn't darts but it still ain't no multiple (6x) Ironman or Sparthlon or Southern Traverse. Not to mention MANY others.

that said, I did the pre tour in 2000. It wasn't easy, but I've done much harder stuff. (yes , there is actually the chance to do the same course before these guys take to it. If you got the time, you can do the whole thing.).

But it is exciting to follow and watch. That again is, if you have the time. Not just an hour thing.

I'll be watching the first week of it on streamtv and then the rest on OLN when I go back to Canada for summer vacation. It won't be the same without Lance.
Here's the website which I think follows the race in real time but no video.

A triathalon doesnt go for 2 weeks, every day. Are you saying that riding in the Alps or the pyranees is the equivalent of sitting on your ass? These guys go for 2 weeks, pretty much no days off, 6-7 hours a day riding all out. I dont care if you did the pre tour. Did you do the pre tour at the pace and effort required in the actual race? Did you do the pre tour trying to break away from Indurain or Armstrong up a climb in the alps? Bullshit mate, you did it half arsed by comparison.

I'm not going to go into detail -- I'm sure you'd disagree anyways.

But let's just say I've run for 6 days straight, so I know a bit about extreme and hard. Hold a few world endurance records.

The tour IS hard but any sport at a top level is hard. Still their heart rate except for periods when climbing, runs at a mediocre 110 bpm. This is a testament to how fit they are, of course but other than the mountains, it isn't too hard and can be bloody pedestrian for a highly trained athlete. Also, stopping every day and resting for 16 or more hours is making it EASY.

Please see the riders who do RAAM -- the Race Across America. 8-10 days of constant biking. Some NEVER get off their bike until maybe 2.5 days in!!! Then we have races like the 3000 km trans Sahara. You carry all your own water/ supplies, navigate yourself.

But I think it isn't a question of only how long/how many days. Also of speed. So for me the Spartathlon of 250+ km in Greek heat , non stop is top of the list. It is even harder than many 6 day ultras like Colac or the Sri Chimnoy runs in N.Y.

Not degrading those in the tour but they don't know PAIN that often. Opps, we might also mention the New Zealand - Australia rowing/crossing. Another tough one.

But doing 6 ironmans (without 16 hours of rest between each effort) is much harder than the tour.

Please also see this delightful article about the strangest cat you'll ever meet. Jure Robic. WOW! Lance couldn't even hold his water bottle (and that is saying a lot because Lance really is the best at what he did.).

While going back to the post about the tour, lets ignore all the sadly predictable comments regarding the comparisons to other races.

I can't wait for the Tour; it has so many good riders and the potential for some great racing. I haven't missed a race in 20 years (some taped.) This is my top 10 finishers.

#1 Ivan Basso Team CSC (Only one to challenge Lance)
#2 Jan Ulrich T-mobile (Still a great rider)
#3 Alexandre Vinokourov Astana-Wrth (BARRING DRUG SUSPENTION)
#4 Yaroslav Popovych Discovery Channel (Young and talented)
#5 Michael Rasmussen Rabobank (King of the mountain)
#6 Levi Leipheimer Team Gerolsteiner (Best American)
#7 Cadel Evans Davitamon-Lotto (Showed toughness last year)
#8 Francisco Mancebo AG2R Prvoyance (finished high last year)
#9 Christophe Moreau Crdit Agricole (Best French rider)
#10 Floyd Landis Phonak Hearing Systems (Good year)

Dark Horse
George Hincapie Discovery Channel (My favorite cyclist)

Nice list, not much I disagree about.

I do hope Vinukurov gets in..................by the book, he's done nothing wrong.

Ullrich and Basso too might have some trouble I hear -- Spanish doping scandal and they are involved.

I think what all this points to is how endemic EPO was/has been in cycling. Trying to get that 5-9% edge in oxygen processing. Really does work and probably was quite common place. I myself am not quite sure how common place now but I still don't think they have the testing that can detect the newer forms....

But all being equal, let them fight it out! Forget the banning!!

Do you know where I can get a list of riders? I guess www.letour.fr ?I'd love to see if some of my fav. Frenchmen will be riding and taking it out on the 14th......

What about Ullich and Zabriskie? Not good enough?

If you're interested in the Tour, and a little knowledgable about cycling another good site is the fantasy game at http://fantasy.cyclingnews.com

I follow the race on cyclingnews which has a live ticker but never seem to be able to find streaming live video on-line. Also Eurosport does some live radio but...

I agree with the #1 and 2 predictions but think it will be the other way arround Ullrich 1 and Basso 2. Vino's out and Popovych is too young, Rasmussen can't time trail-remember last years horrible second last stage?

So I think #3 will be Evans. Mancebo maybe if he can get Moreau to work for him. They're on the same team now.

SAD SAD Update, I hear Ulrich and Basso is out due to A DRUG SCNADAL.

STRASBOURG, France (AP) -- Favorites Jan Ullrich, Ivan Basso and other cyclists were barred Friday from the Tour de France in the biggest doping scandal to hit cycling in years.

The decision to prevent Ullrich, Basso and others from racing threw the sport's premier race into upheaval the day before it begins.

I will now take Cadel Evens or whoever from my list is clean
