A November 2005 poll by Harris Interactive found that one American in five believes he or she has been reincarnated; 40 percent believe in ghosts; 68 percent believe in angels.

It's over. The party's over.

I've seen those stats before. Marvelled at them. Marvelled more at their contradictory nature. The average American will believe absolutely anything--recent elections results seem to verify this.

As startling as those statistics might be, how do they compare with other countries? For example, Korea? I would guess that a good many Koreans believe they have been reincarnated, since something like 25% are Buddhists. I would guess it's an even higher per centage who believe in ghosts, since seeing a ghost in a dream is seeing a 'real' ghost.

Here are some scarier ones that are more unique to the US:

64 per cent of people questioned for a recent poll said they were open to the idea of teaching creationism in addition to evolution in schools, while 38 per cent favoured replacing evolution with creationism.
40 per cent of Americans believe God will eventually intervene in human affairs and bring about an end to life on Earth, according to a survey carried out in 2002. Of those believers, almost half thought this would occur in their lifetime with a return of Jesus from heaven.
1 adult American in five believes that the Sun revolves around Earth, according to one study carried out last summer.
80 per cent of Americans surveyed by the CNN TV news network believe that their government is hiding evidence of the existence of space aliens.
70 per cent believe it likely that Saddam Hussein was involved personally in the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

But let's give them some credit:

"A recent poll shows that two-thirds of Americans think creationism should be taught alongside evolution. What's even funnier are the poll results the media choose to ignore. The same poll found that a majority of Americans favor government-guaranteed health insurance. And nearly 70 percent favor "more generous government assistance to the poor," according to the poll, conducted by PewResearchCenter."

Only 40 percent of Americans can name more than four of the Ten Commandments,
and a scant half can cite any of the four authors of the Gospels.

Twelve percent believe Joan of Arc was Noahs wife.

Three quarters of Americans believe the Bible teaches that God helps those who help themselves.

Yes this is true. But if you watch Korean TV, you'll recognize that all Korean ghosts are blue. Blue ghosts can diddle me.

i don't believe that (that is to say, i don't believe that 12% of americans believe that). if that were the case, i don't think it would have been used as a joke in 'bill and ted's excellent adventure'.

What are you talking about? The last two are down from 95% not so long ago! As for the first, they probably misunderstod and thought it was reincarcerated.

On the other hand, I'm somewhat afraid of Canadians, but for entirely practical reasons. Does that count?

I did my own poll and concluded that 89% of Dave's posters are afraid of sunlight. And hard work.

People can come up with statistics to prove anything. Forty percent of all people know that.

Metempsychosis has a wide following among many highly educated professionals. Don't relegate it to the same probability as ghosts. Dr. Ian Stevenson's work has silenced a great many skeptics.

For a 'reader' on metempsychosis, see here.

I thought this thread may have been a tribute to Bowie. Confused

Stupdity isn't limited or unique to Americans.

Namaste.
