Well, actually, I don't. I think the current administration and general atmosphere of fear (not unlike the commie fear) suck. But pretty much my entire screen in the forum is filled with anti-American threads. I like to diss America as much as the next Canadian (well, actually no, I barely do and only when it really deserves it) but this is really pathetic. People need to get a grip. Anyways, there is one Canadian in particular on a bit of a rampage. It's not that I totally disagree with ce poster but it is going too far and is a little boring. Personally, I would like to hear some crap about Canada too and we can discuss that and who knows, maybe help change it for the better (fat chance, I know). I am sure there is some Aussie or Brit crap that smells just as bad, why do we never hear about that? That would be more interesting as I don't know as much about those countries... |

Well, I do!
It's time you learned the 10 Reasons Why I Love America:
10 Reasons Why I Love America
1. I love America because summers are longer the farther south you go. That makes for moral superiority.
2. I love America because we dont put birds on our money. That is clearly the mark of a superior political entity.
3. I love America because neither the mosquito nor the deer fly is the national bird.
4. I love America because smoking dope is not an Olympic event. A regional event, OK. But not an Olympic one.
5. I love America because it is a place where people who have read one book in college and watched three episodes of I Love Lucy can be an expert on it.
6. I love America because it is a country where you can judge the education and intelligence of a people by TV shows that focus on what trivial facts people do not know. It makes judging people so much easier.
7. I love America because it is a country whose national sport is even less popular than the one where the ball bounces funny. That is far better than a country where you cant even see the puck on TV. No need to mention the sport where they dont even use their hands.
8. I love America because we have a President, not some silly-ass Prime Minister. Prime is when you pour water down a well so it will pump water. A major silly idea when you come to giving a title to the supposed leader of a country.
9. I love America because we had the balls to attack, defeat and imprison Indians, rather than just pen them up on reservations and put them in the same condition without a war.
10. I love America because we dont send media stars under cover to other countries and try to take over their entertainment industry while pretending to be natives.
(I tried really hard to make everything relate to the 'other' country, like a certain poster does, but that is harder than I expected.) |

The current administration sucks all bags, but that said, the world is better off with American in it, than with no America. America is, despite the best efforts of Bush, a force for good in the world. I love the fact only a country like America could, at the end of WWII, have the entire world at its feet, be the only nuclear power, troops in every major nation on earth... all it had to do was squeeze its fist like the Soviets. Instead, America gave the world back to itself, with low interest loans.
The America I love is best expressed not by words but by two pieces of music by Aaron Copland: "Fanfare For The Common Man" and "Appalachian Spring".
That's the America that's been lost during the Bush administrations. |

My only true regret in this life is that the Republicans weren't in control in 1945. They would have made Europe a colony and brought civilization to it for the first time since the fall of Rome. |

You hit the nail on the head. All you europeans and commonwealthers should be relieved that the US is the superpower, and not china or russia.
Except for sweden or Norway, no nation as a superpower would be more benevolent.
Sure this current administration sucks. But I dont give all the blame to Bush. This guy wanted to pull back from the world and just focus on relations with latin america. That all changed september 11. Someone in the muslim world was going to pay no matter who the presidnet was at the time.
The US has created a relative peace the last 50 years. A peace that has let a billion people escape poverty. |

Do you want us to put a big blue dot on it so you can see it better? We can make it red if it goes fast, too, maybe even with a streak behind it to make it look flashy. |

Had to go and remind me, didn't you. God that was gay. How'd it go...Gayer then riding the big gay ride at Gayland. Was that Sparkles? I forget now.
Anyway, yeah, I love America too. Sure, it's my home and all, but deep down, I believe there are things there worth fighting and dying for. If we can banish all the fundi's to Beirut or something, it'd be totally awesome.

Americans have been bashed on Dave's ever since there was a Dave's.
I like getting bashed. Maybe I'm a glutton for punishment. |

I cut the quote of the above poster because, well, the rest was drivel. But I completely agree with the above two sentiments. The US reached its nadir a little early: WWII. A lot of really stupid crap went on before and even more stupid crap after, but Roosevelt through WWII was magic.
When I speak of being an American, that is what I think of. Can that be again?? The world had better hope so. And, if not the US, then someone. If that doesn't come again, the coming Perfect Storm is going to lead to another Dark Age. Think not? Look at history.
Knowledge and power are cycling faster and faster. The reason the American Age is already drawing to a close is partly due to these very natural fluctuations. (See Chaos Theory cross-checked with Ravi Batra's The Great Depression of 1990 (pay attention to the cycles) and Kennedy's The Rise and Fall of the Great Nations.) but add in the natural calamities to come, the political instability, the erosion of individual rights, the various forms of extremism...
I've said it before and say it again now: all fall down and go BOOM! |

Who might that be?
america is corrupt and its leaders are evil. The world needs to unite and boycott them for the next 25 years. Imagine a world without american superficiality and economic bullying! Ahhhh.... how sweet that would be! If the current bunch of criminals in the white house stay in power much longer they will ruin their country for decades. Their economy is already on the verge of collapse thanks to Dumbya. If they don't address it fast, bad things will come, and we all know the americans will find a way to make the world pay their bills and clean up their mess. Responsibility is not in the american character. |

OP, you have an interesting point of view. Points valid (RE: Dave's and otherwise) and your interest in maintaining a sense of balance is cool.
Kudos to you for that.
Responses to others are a waste of time. I should have remembered my appreciation for the Scandinavian point of view on discussions of politics, religion and other matters earlier. I should have known, considering the fact that you started this thread in response to another poster.

But makes me wonder....if America called in all the loans, added up all the aid to date, stopped sending new foreign aid, and added up what it has paid out to rebuild (some of which America was reponsible for and should assist), how astounding would the number be?

I agree the other post was confrontational and your general idea is fine, but I don't think you fully understand the economics of the world (trust me, I know very little myself). If other countries called in all the loans to America, it would not be good either. America isn't quite as strong as you might think. |

There are things that suck about every country and I sometimes wonder why folks constantly insist on bringing up the suckiest bits.
So, I think i will say this bout America right now (actually, it's probably true about most countries):
There is RARELY to NEVER a time when a government outshines the greatness of the people that it rules over. |
