Just curious about how you all my pronounce it. I pronounce it as one syllable when teaching younger kids about the colors and they tend to pronounce it as 2 syllables. I'm tempted to try and work it out of them, to say it "my way" but it doesn't really matter so I don't push it.

Thoughts?

How on earth do you pronounce orange with one syllable? Do you say 'arnge'? There is some regional difference as to whether it is pronounced like 'or' as opposed to 'ar' but it has 2 syllables.

One syllable doesn't make sense!

I know what you mean, but it would still be two syllables because I don't think you would pronounce it "onj".
I think you probably pronounce the word without a rhoticized /r/, like most of us do in natural speech, so it comes out like o[r]unge.

I pronounce it with 2, but I think I remember my childhood teachers saying it was 1 syllable.

Could be 2 syllables. (1 should be taught)

"orange" could be pronounced with 1 syllable. (2 should be taught)

How about "eaten". I only pronouce one consanant: "n". (the "t" should be taught).

What should or should not be taught depends on who you're teaching.

Definitely two syllables. Except in rural areas in the southern US. Then it sounds more like "arnj." I think the 2 syllable pronunciation is used by the majority of people.

You could be pronouncing it with 2 syllables but unaware that you are.

If you check the dictionary, it is divided into two syllables.

Was that really a serious question, or just something to spark debate?
