I bought an ex. hard drive last year and when it was working, it would hum and a green light would come on.

Now, no humming and just an orange light. Any ideas as to what might be wrong? (i've already tried replacing the USB cable)

Thanks

If it's a 2.5" drive, it's probably a Fujitsu...the same as mine. Most of the external USB 2.5" drives are Fujitsu.

Try a different USB post? Does it have a power cable as well or does it draw from the USB port? Is there any noise from the drive? Did you try a different computer?

Yeah mine won't run except from one USB port (the first I hooked it up to). Anyone know how to change that situation, so I can plug it into my USB multi hub thingee...????

I don't know much about USB hubs, but perhaps your drive won't work if the hub is drawing too much power from the one port. I mean, a UBB HDD, mouse, dica and some other device might be trying to draw more power than the one port the hub is connected to can supply.

Really, this is just a thought...I haven't the time right now to properly look into it for you.

The drive won't work on any other USB ports on the computer? Do the ports work for other USB devices?

If your drive is inside of an enclosure (case), the case could be bad. This happened to me and i put the drive into a new case and all was well. Which is good, because a 30,000 won case was a lot better than losing a 100 Gb or so of data.
