Way back when.... I was still living in the great white north, I saw a TV program about a little old lady in Alberta who had invented a way of extracting the oil from tar-sand on her kitchen stove.
She was able to do it very easily and cheaply and was able to get a higher percentage of the oil out of the sand. She used a principle of using a light oil to extract the heavy oil, rather than using steam.
I can't remember the name of the program...it may have been the 5th Estate or something similar.
Problem was no one would take her seriously.

The motive being what? |
Sorry mithridates!! I suppose I am defensive tonight for some reason. I made the mistake of sifting through Daves and reading all of the anti-American rhetoric. Not your fault. ;( That and a few *beep* didn't help. |
That's all right. I assume you mean c*cktails?
Only one person here actually believes I'm anti-American but his opinion doesn't count. |
Hey, don't goad gopher out his hole... |

The whole, "Why don't Americans KNOW us, LOVE us and APPRECIATE us?" thing has a rather simple answer: We (people) pay attention to that which needs attending.
It's a bit like your girlfriend or boyfriend constantly saying, "But you don't TALK to me. You don't SAY you love me every day. There must be something wrong!!!"
Do you ***really*** want Dumbya paying attention to you??? |

fiveeagles, the reason gas is so expensive in Canada is because of taxes we impose on it GST, PST and various gas taxes. Also the oil in Alberta is not bubbling out of the ground, it is trapped in sand and needs massive amounts of electricity, water and natural gas to get it out of the sand. It is not profitable to removce the oil unless it is more than 50$ a barrel, so the higher the prices the more oil that will be brought online. Of course with Enbridge building its Gateway pipeline to the west coast soon China/India/Japan/Korea will be getting into the Alberta game. |
I have heard that it's 25 bucks a barrel where they begin to make a profit. Do you have a link on this OH? Man, you seem to know quite a bit about this stuff...how come?
How about the BC coast...are they going to be opening up drilling soon? |

The BC coast I would say no, but Gordon Campbell is a conservative snake so I wouldn't put it past him to try but the people of BC are like those of California, they aren't easily dissuaded over the environment. And they don't really need to drill once the Gateway opens up they will make tons of money on comossions via Alberta oil. I studied the history of oil in Uni, I again suggest Daniel Yergin's The Prize for anyone trying to get a handle of just how important oil is on the international scene. i will try to post a link about Alberta oil and its profit margins soon. |

And CBC reporters are actually know better... C'mon. How many reporters mindlessly report about the latest car that works on water or a guy who complains he can't patent a perpetual motion machine and it sure seems to work for the reporter? And yet industry remains, gosh, dubious... |

The oft quoted figure is $50 but this page says $30:

$25 - $30 is the break-even cost, I've never heard $50. I watch Bloomberg and ROBtv (Canada) every night and am studying to be a stock analyst, own oil & gas stocks and $50 is way too high.

Mith, why are oil prices so high if Canada has so much to export? Is it as simple as supply and demand? Too much demand in the world. Why then does the price of oil go up with the instability in the middle East? Canada couldn't make up the lack? |
The price per barrel is high because of the geopolitcal concerns in the world today, especially Iran, Nigerai and Venuzuala who are large players in the oil & gas industry. Therefore there is a "terror premium built in the price, anywhere from $8 -$20.
There hasn't been a major oil discovery in years. Another reason why gas prices remain high is that there hasn't been a new refinery built in the US since 1976. Supplies are so tight that an accident or a hurricane can increase prices suddenly.
Some ways to play these - Oil Sands - Suncor
Refiner - Valero |
