I'm not going to insult you, OP, but all the things you list are utter clichedom that - as Billy implies - are heard solely via expats on the internet, rarely if ever from Koreans.
Gets tiresome. |
You are full of shit, newbie. I was in Korea five years, spoke the language, and socialised widely with Koreans, and save for the World Cup reporting and the McArther thing I heard all of those from the mouths of Koreans many many times. It's one thing to be ignorant, but you seem to enjoy standing on the mountain top and joyfully proclaiming your ignornace at the top of your lungs as if it's some kind of revelation, like "Look mummy, I don't know my ass from my elbow, wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!"

You could have added Alien Abductions to the list. But listen, I'm not complaining, I'm just glad to make it back. |

I can't believe people still post that retarded picture. Jeez..
Rawiri, I liked your story, fwiw. Very funny. It reminds me of when two guys came into the bank I worked at in the US, right before I was about to move here to Korea. We were talking about my move, and they asked me what I planned to do here.
"Well, there's a lot of money in the illegal sex trade in Asia, and even more if you can get underage children involved. I'm great with kids, so I'm gonna try to see if I can get into that some ... "
These two straight-laced, conservative guys... man they bought it 100%. They just didn't know what to say! What idiots. |

I too have told Koreans all sorts of outrageous lies (because i'm a d*ck). I think my favorite was when I said that I'm the leader of a breakdancing crew called the Red Rockers.
They always seemed to listen and nod very credulously, so it's hard to resist. I dunno if (A) Koreans just rarely make up such jokes so they don't get it or (B) they're willing to believe anything about foreigners or (C) they think i'm nuts but are too polite to call me on it.
And what about those exercise machines that do nothing but vibrate? what are they supposed to do? shake the pounds away? and every time a korean gives me diet/medical advice (this is good for your skin!) I promptly ignore it cuz they've got some wacky ideas.
this thread could have been cool, but I think the OP was disingenuous. It was just a rant about nationalism/xenophobia disguised as a fun topic. |

Speaking of them being so gullible, a little while back someone at one of the other boards posted a blog article about how he got fired because his boss caught him masterbaiting in his apt. It was obviously a joke but some of the Korean online news sites ran a big article about, about other evil things westerners do.
It was a pretty funny article and so ridiculous as to be pretty unbelievable.
So it gave me the idea, we should plant outrageously unbeleivable and funny stories on that other board's blog where all the Koreans read, and see if anything gets picked up by the news.
Could be dangerous, but could be fun..... |

So he wrote about meistarbouting in his OWN apartment? And the Koreans who believed his story were offended by the private meistarbouting, not by the (fictional) sacking he got from his nosy boss? This expat made up an exaggerated satire about a ridiculous breach of privacy, and the Korean online news sites took sides with the hand-made puppet of his satire because they related to it more than the author?
Your idea does sound tempting ... so long as the "stories" sound basically harmless by Western standards. It would be best to set a trap that only wowsers would fall into.
PS: Suck on this, "swear" filter. |

I agree that Koreans are quite gullible. They hear it from one source and they believe it very quickly.
They are also quick to believe anything that makes Korea look better and makes USA look worse. Or Japan.
Like the Japanese eating babies. |

Some Koreans can be idiots, but it is the same everywhere.
I had a neighbour in the UK who wouldn't allow pictures of birds in her house as it would bring bad luck to the family. She even went so far as to cut pictures of birds out of books her children had! Nutter!
Koreans do believe some very weird things: Fan death, Kimchi preventing bird flu and SARS, US army urban myths, etc.
One of the stupidest things I've ever heard was a student telling me that Japan was evil because they 'stole' Kimchi and renamed it Kimuchi and they also changed 'Corea' into Korea so that Japan would come before them in the western alphabet, the C for Korea thing was actually something she had learned from a Korean teacher at school I told a Japanese friend of my wife about that one and she found it very amusing indeed.
Many people and not just Americans and Koreans believe in the daftest things, I don't mind people holding ludicrous ideas as long as they are harmless, I find them pretty amusing really. |

Yes, but the difference is that anti-bird lady is generally regarded a nutcase by her compatriots while fan-death ajumma is not. |

I guess that is true. Mrs. W was widely regarded as a rather strange lady. |
