School gave me a surprise 5 day weekend during exams so I need to see something new. If you have any good ideas then please let me know. Here's where I've been outside of Seoul:
-Jeju Do
-Busan
-Kyung-Ju
-Daegu
-Mokpo
-Panmunjeom
-Pyeonchon
I'm thinking about
1)going to Jeonju for a day and then from there going to Jirisan
2) Checking out the East Coast
3) Checking out some islands on the south coast
4) Going to Gwangju, tour the tea fields and see the sites of the protests/massacre. go down to mokpo and head over to some island for a day and then head back up through Jeonju. |

Jeonju has some old Jeoson dynasty buildings worth a gander while travelling through. I was there for the film festival and found the city itself alright but not a draw in itself.
Jirisan is an excellent choice. Bring hiking footwear and enjoy, regardless of the weather.

I was in Ulleungdo when it was raining. still was worth it! You could do the caves at Donghae then ferry over.

My fav option. And I know a lot about this. PM when you go. But I DO recommend waiting until sunny weather hits in July.

The best bet.
Now is a great time to visit Boseong. Green as heck and BETTER when cloudy and rainy, believe me. Mystical. Could zip down to Yulpo on the south coast for a green tea spa!
Never been to massacre sites, but sounds cool historically, bringing a camera and showing your students afterwards. I'd love to hear details about this.
From Mokpo take a 3-hour ferry to the westernmost island of Hongdo. Worth the trip! Like Ulleungdo, but lesser hikes and better ferry tours around the island. Or bus it to Jindo, where the dogs roam everywhere. Nice mountain and some interesting intriguing beach areas. Or, if the weather is good, go by bus to Wando and ferry under an hour to Bogildo to see historical poetry on rocks and beaches.
Good fun whatever. |

Thanks for the helpful advice vanislander. I think I'm going to go to Gwangju and then to the tea fields at Beosung (sp?) I've decided to keep the south islands for another, more sunny, trip. Again, I appreciate it. |

Van Islander is infatutated with himself and the south coast because he happened to live on Geoje Island for a spell. He like to brag about that often on this board, as if swimming at a trash-strewn beach is a big deal. The advice he gave you is poor and misguided. You do not want to go there when the "sunny weather hits in July."
At at that time of the year, the beaches are mobbed with domestic tourists and they leave heaps of garbage on the beach. Karoake machines are pumped up with drunken fathers, children run amuck and mothers squat in the shade cooking up galbi and slopping the grease in the sand. The local villagers become very greedy at this time of the year and jack up prices on everything: rooms at yeogwons double in price, a bottle of water triples in price and you get the picture. Traffic jams up on the backroads with desperate Griswold-like familes. Normally you just roll up to the beach, but in July a guard is posted at the parking lot with his hand out demanding an entrance fee to what is a free, public beach 10 months out of the year. The greediness in the air is stunning.
The south coast is a wonderful place to explore but save it for September-October or April-May and save yourself some sanity. |
