It's about time in the cycle for a new "age of reason".

While I agree with your sentiment, I disagree with your calculations. The next age of reason isn't due for another 14 centuries, give or take. As much as I hate to think it, we are due for another Dark Age first. The forces of decentralization and superstition are growing. The classification of people by religion is on the rise---if you don't believe me, just look at BigVerne's posts.

The Barbarians are at the gates.

That makes sense. America was born on the tail end of an age of enlightenment. Hopefully, we are in a "dark age" right now, and it won't get any worse (as far as people believing in, and acting upon, foolish ideas/ideals). I'm an optimist.

Jesus... pseudo-pun intended... A little logic, less #$%@#$%, please:

Any Christian person would be considered completely NORMAL to believe in angels. Why wouldn't they? Was there a major announcement from all the worlds Christian churches that angels don't exist and to not believe in them anymore??? IF you were bashing them for believing in God at all, you'd have a point, but to bash people for believing in a rather insignificant part of the religious doctrine of the faith they hold is just dumb. It's like saying, "You're an American and you believe in Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness??"

What would be strange is if they DIDN'T. They're CHRISTIAN!!! Read the feckin' bible! Since 75 percent or so of Americans still call themselves Christian, seems pretty silly to put that into a group of things considered to be loony.

OK, back to the more playful aspect of the thread.

No. Believing in ghosts, angels, and reincarnation is just dumb. Then again, I don't think cows are sacred, either. Anyone could have made that s**t up. Come to think of it....ah, hell. It's not worth getting into.

MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMmmmmmmmmm. Ribs.

Considering that no one knows for sure what happens after death, that is even a dumber statement to make.

But these people believe these things (ghosts, angels, et al) exist HERE, on earth. NOT merely in the "afterlife".

Me: 1; Dumb people: 0

Also, let's play by your rules and see what happens:

Fact: Angels, reincarnation, ghosts, Santa Claus....these are all creations of MAN. Human beings (we've been around for a long, long time, mind you) did not always believe in an afterlife, nor ghosts, nor Santa. Those things were dreamed up by people somewhere along the way.

Now, fast foward to the present, and you have freaks like Fiveeagles spouting s**t like this:

Quote:
All of a sudden a large spirit apprehends you. You struggle with all your strength, but it is useless, the spirit has great power. He is the size of a grizzly, with large fangs and has two broken wings. He is extremely menacing as he puts you in chains and throws you on the back of his pack animal. He leads you to the place of greatest torments. While you are traveling, other bat like spirits come and begin to rip the flesh off your body. The pain is excruciating. Your bodily form is ripped away and you have become a skeleton. The maggots continue to crawl over your body. The more you try to remove them, the more they come.

Now, you're gonna sit here and tell me that you, as a rational, living, breathing organism, believe in some bulls**t that some person pulled out of their ass exactly like Fiveeagles did right here on ESLcafe?!?!

No, you're not. Because you're smarter than that. Don't sell yourself short.

Dunno about "belief," but I'll allow for the possibility ...

40 percent believe in ghosts;

You've obviously never seen a ghost - they are not half as bad as all the stories would have you think ...

Quote:
68 percent believe in angels.

Had a former student from Michoacan when I taught back in California. His name was Angel. Didn't have any wings, but I did believe in him, which is what a teacher to do for his students ... does he count?

It's over. The party's over.

The party's just starting dude, whatcha talkin' 'bout?

Does the Harris poll offer any comparisons to percentages of people with similar notions in places like Oz, Kiwiland, Canuckistan and the yUK? (Sorry, that "y" in front of UK was a typo, honest.)

Really curious about the last part.

72.4% of statistics are made up on the spot. Take that.

Which quote, the one I originally referenced or the "God exists and he's an American" one?

The latter is from Alan Moore's Watchmen.

God is an American is from the Bowie tune.

Incidently, I read that they're turning Watchmen in to a movie.
