The guy at the next desk had a new magazine today. It's 한겨려 21. According to him, it is produced by a group of journalists who were jailed under Chun Doo-Hwan.
The cover: a picture of 최진철 all bloody
Across the top: 아시아가 울었다
Just felt like sharing that. |

Obviously Korea is the straw that stirs the drink in Asia. Was there ever any doubt about the hub of Asia? |

I really do wonder if there is a segment of Asians who kind of hang together...the old 'all us guys with straight black hair and epicanthic folds on our eyes' crowd.
The David Duke crowd at home get all in dither about white folk hanging together, but then they also get in a snit about Catholics and other undesirables and it all falls apart.
So I'm kind of wondering, do some Bhutanese swell up with pride when some other Asian country does well? Do some Sri Lankans shout out, "Holy cow! Go Uzbekistan!" Do Omanis strut around with a sense of continental pride when Kuwaitis open a new shopping mall? |

中CCTV "한국 졌지만, 아시아의 존엄 잃지않았다"
(China CCTV "Korea lost, but they didn't lose the pride of Asia")
It seems some people were sort of rooting for Korea as they were worried about a reduction of Asia's WC quota for 2010.
日언론, "한국 패배로 아시아 입지 줄어들 수도" 우려
(Japanese Media, "Asia's quota can be reduced after Korea's loss")
Ya-ta boy, 한겨례 21 is the correct name. |

If you watch "Love in Asia," apparently Sri Lankans and Japanese are all about some Korea soccer action. Head to Insadong and find the little teashop run by a freaky dude who loves soccer and his pregnant Japanese wife and conduct an interview about how other countries viewed Korea's success in the World Cup! |

I think there are Asians from other countries that cheer for Korea's soccer team certainly. However, for Korea to make it out as part of the Korean wave is stretching things a bit.
Good point about Asia's quota going down after their dismal showing in the World Cup. Australia will be joining the qualification pool so things will be even tougher. Korea could actually be in pretty tough to qualify if they only allow 3 teams from Asia for 2010. Perhaps some Chinese or other Asians wanted any Asian team to do well so the quota of 4 teams stayed the same. So perhaps it is not a love of Korea per se, but a more practical thing. |

Is being locked up by Chun Doo-hwan a bad thing? Judging by the way he ran the country, if you were here at the time and you didn't spend a bit of it in jail, there's something wrong with you. |

Asia is a state of mind. Apart from the three major countries of NE Asia, most of the rest of the continent owes more to India in terms of cultural baggage. God only knows what a Malaysian, a Sri Lankan or an Iranian would have in common with this bunch. |
