How do you rate yourself as a listener?
Why should I listen to anyone else? They aren't me and therefore obviously have nothing to say worth hearing.

I know how to keep my mouth shut while the other guy is rattling on. It gives me a chance to think of my next point.

I used to listen, but then I realized no one else is listening, so I stopped.

I listen for key words so I can free-associate to my next point.

Oh, were you saying something? I wasn't listening. Did you see the hooters on that chick that just walked in?

I only listen close enough to find a hole in your argument so I can try to turn it against you.

Your girlfriend dumped you? That's too bad. It will help you feel better if you hear how the last 7 women dumped me. I can pretend to show sympathy for you while I talk about me again.

Hunh? If you weren't talking about me then it wasn't important.

Listeners are a rare breed. I was just wondering how you feel you do in that department.

Everyone has one mouth and two ears, but no one listens twice as much as they talk, except maybe for psychiatrists who are paid to shut up and listen to you talk about yourself.

I voted for free association. I'm an awesome listener because I *beep*ing hate talking, as I suck arse at it, so I'm all about the listening. But your poll seems to think nobody can listen.

You are right. It should be amended.

Can you think of any options that should be added?

My listening skills vary from person to person.

I give strangers an open ear depending on my mood or what they are trying to talk to me about.

The other night, I was in a bar and this lady started talking my ear off about her cats. Did I care? Of course not. I was polite but didn't listen attentively. If she had been attractive I might of listened, but she was boring and in her 50s. I usually have an attitude that you can learn something from everyone, but when someone tries to rape my ear I tune them out.

I will listen to my friends attentively because they listen to me in return. The conversation rolls and I am entertained. I keep the conversation light or get in a deep philisophical discussion depending on the person and their level of intelligence. Either way I usually go with the flow of the conversation or I will direct it into a topic I am interested in.

To answer the OP: I rate myself as a sporadic listener. It depends if the conversation is interesting. It depends if the speaker is a close friend. It depends if the speaker is attractive. It depends what mood I am in. It depends if I have something else going on. It depends If I am watching the game on the tele.

I'm not that good at listening to the other half of a casual conversation, mainly because it's hard for me to feign interest in other people. Embarassed

I've got a very low concentration span, am highly egotistical and have low tolerance for the views of others....so I would imagine I fare very poorly.
