Yeeha! Just as i predicted..Argentina the stronger team but germany scraped it.

Under the pressure of penalties, the Argentine could not compete with German focussed professionalism.

Sorry, should qualify that, on the football pitch.

Argentina failed to utilize the most powerful weapon at their disposal.
Not Lionel Messi.
Argentine economists. They should have put a couple of Argentine economists on the pitch. Having lived in Buenos Aires for a couple of years, I can say wth certainty that there is no escape from the devastation which an Argentine economist can unleash. If the US airdropped half a dozen into Iraq, victory would be ours and despair theirs in a week's time.
OK, so I'm tired and sad. This is two straight times I picked Argentina to win it all.
I guess I'm an England fan now. Crying or Very sad

Congratulations Germany and good riddance Argentina.

After the initial euphoria following SOME of Argentina's play in the group stages (stuffing six past fodder S & M didn't convince or impress me as a statement of intent I'm afraid) perhaps some of the more astute observers out there would have noticed signs of Argentina reverting to the unpleasant but all too familiar side of this flamboyant footballing nation's Jekyll & Hyde personality. Did you see how that player absolutely mugged the referee to get Podalski booked inside a few minutes? Contact? Podalski barely scracthed him! Did you notice the rolling, the diving, the theatrics, the blatant time wasting? For me it brought back sad memories of the spectacle Maradonna's thug club reduced the 90 final to.

On the plus side for Germany thank god for Odonkor that's all I can say. That splendid little guy turned the match for Germany. It warmed my heart to see him running at Sorin and feeding in some tasty balls into the box (just a shame Klose had gone off by then and couldn't enjoy the benefit). It showed me that the winger's craft is alive and well, after seeing so much in this competition to indicate that wide men are an extinct species. He's not Litbarski, but does a passing imitation of Hassler.

Looking toward the semi, I fear gallant defeat for the hosts. Italy, the defensive choke hold specialists of world soccer, just seem to have that sense of unstoppable destiny. Five games, one goal conceded. Only Brazil have a better defensive record. I just hope that the Azzuri will dein to give us a few goals along the way to that trophy.

Congrats to Germany!

I'm actually living with 3 Germans here in Honolulu for a month.. the excitement at 5am in the apartment was pretty high. (Yeah, the World Cup is played at strange times here!)

no team has put a ball into the AZZURRI NET in this WC..
The Azzurri has only conceded an OWN GOAL!!

we would have been going into this semi unconceded DAMN THAT OWN GOAL!!

Right you are IG, I wasn't paying attention to detail. Indeed Italy have yet to be scored against in open play by the oppostion.

Just let Klose get a couple against Italy so that I can collect from the bookies eh? The Azzuri backline can at least grant an old man one peice of charity on the way to becoming world champions. After all, some of us have got to make a living Smile

I don't think they were too bad at all, and they dominated possession and outplayed Germany for most of the game. They looked the better team, more creative and attacking and positive. So I'm dissapointed it came down to penalties.

Di Canio was a god. He was just exciting Lazio's traditionally right wing fans. He was a showman, and he loved to play up the crowd. (He is Italian by the way)

For the first and only time in your entire life, you're absolutely right. Di Canio is a tw*t.

I saw just as many bogus dives from Germany - if not more - than I did from Argentina. And Ballack's faux eye gouge took the cake.

Argentina looked stronger, but when their keeper went down I knew they were a goner. How can you hope to win in a shoot-out with a reserve keeper? The hit on the Argentine keeper didn't look too bad, so I dunno wtf. It reminded me of the ESPN series, "Playmakers". If that were to happen in the NFL, they'd shoot 'em up and have him back on the pitch.

Namaste.

Jens Lehman's value will have shot up. Some great saves and he always 'guesses' the right way in penalties.
