Greetings,

I was in Korea from May 2004-5, and it may have been the worst year of my life. I was lied to to get me over there, and it got worse, WAY worse, the moment I set foot on the ground. I'm hoping to avoid that this time around so I'm posting here.

So my question deals with where to go. I'm looking for public middle or high schools, and I have two very good leads on jobs in the locations mentioned above. So what I was wondering is if anyone had thoughts on either or both of these locations?

Suwon: good? bad? ugly? What shopping centres/grocery stores are there? What's life like? I know it's close to Seoul, yada yada, but the city itself?

Bundang-Seongnam: How expensive is it??? Are there DVD rooms? what grocery stores?

Any and all thoughts are welcome and appreciated, so post a way.

Thanks

I would personally choose Bundang, because everything is much newer there. Although, Suwon is not bad, I get kind of depressed when I go there. I think it's something about the name Suwon-Sewer. Bundang's a nice place if the job is good, that's the most important thing.

I live in Bundang but I prefer Suwon (lived there for 3 years).

It is the capital of Gyeonggi province and has ALL the amenities, shopping, subway connection, trains (not subway) to anywhere else in Korea, 90 minutes from the airport and depending on where you are living - 30-60 minutes to central Seoul.

Bundang is also nice and modern with all the amenities. Again, depending on where you live in Bundang it takes 20-60 minutes to central seoul.

do a search....there are a lot of threads on both suwon and bundang.

i live in bundang....it's clean, somewhat spacious, there's a huge park next to my house, i can rollerblade or ride my bike along the Tanchahn River, it has Lotte Dept. Store, Samsung Plaza, Carrefour in Yatap and Ori, movie theaters, DVD rooms (i dont know why you asked about them)....but it can be boring here, especially for someone young like myself...i am almost always up in Seoul or Suwon on the weekends.

Like the poster above said though, the job is most important though...location should be second

Lived in Suwon for a year and a half. It has it's nice areas and it's ugly areas. Samsung electronics is here so you can get some nice privates if you're into that. I like the areas around Sungyungwan University (north suwon), hwaseon, and metandong. Yong-tong seems to be the most popular place for foreigners to live there. Yong-tong is a new development, very clean and stale with a terrible location within Suwon and for getting out of Suwon. Suwon is a million plus people and has everything you need locally.

If you're close to Suwon train station or Ingye-dong (ask your boss for the specific housing location) then it should be quite convenient living there. Elsewhere and you'll probably be out in the sticks or something.

Bundang is suburbia, nice but kind of boring for the average ESLer over here for fun. If you're in Seohyeon or Sunae, it's alright, though. Job is very important here, as the area is alright wherever you are.

Seongnam looks like shite from the few times I've been there. I don't know it all that well though.
