I've found a Korean guy to build me a PC, but I'm not sure what to tell him to buy for it. I'm looking to spend around 1,000,000 won for something decent. The thing is I haven't kept up with all the latest developments in PCs, so give me some advice. I'd like something good enough to run "Oblivion" really well.

Go to anandtech.com and look under Guides for a recent Mid-Range Buyer's Guide. e.g. "Pre-AM2 Mid-Range Buyers' Guide, May 2006"

Then, make some decisions.

Recommended:

* 3 Ghz Intel Pentium 4 or equivalent processor
* 1 GB System RAM
* ATI X800 series, NVIDIA GeForce 6800 series, or higher video card

Minimum System Requirements:

* Windows XP, Windows 2000, Windows XP 64-bit
* 512MB System RAM
* 2 Ghz Intel Pentium 4 or equivalent processor
* 128MB Direct3D compatible video card
* and DirectX 9.0 compatible driver

The minimum requirements are easy to reach, but the game just won't look that good. What kind of monitor will you buy? If LCD, look carefully at the native resolution; this is what you will have to run the game at, so look at some reviews for the game and see what they used for graphics cards. CRTs can display many reolutions and still look good, but LCDs running below the native resolution don't look good at all.

For 2D, it's no issue, as any card will run at 1280x1024, but gaming is a whole diffferent deal. Running Oblivion at that res will take a bit of horsepower, so don't skimp on the graphics.

This is how I order my spending:

1. Graphics - spend the most on this. Actually, a close tie with the CPU. ATI or Nvidia, second from the top.
2. CPU - This and the graphics are the heart of gaming. AMD all the way.
3. RAM - Lots of hoopla about timings, but in the end, for gaming, a CAS 3 or 2.5 aren't really so different. Just don't buy Samsung RAM.
4. Mainboard - ASUS - NForce 4 chipset. This chipset rocks with AMD.
5. HDD - Western Digital or Seagate. Don't buy a Smsung drive.
6. Sound - I use nice Sennheiser headphones. Apartment living.
6. ODD - Plextor.
7. Keyboard / mouse - I like wired peripherals, MS MM keyboard and Logitech MX518.

Definitely if you want to play Oblivion!!!

You will need to buy a graphics card in the region of 300,000 won to run Oblivion at anything more than medium. My nVidia 7900GT (300,000won) barely copes with most settings at around three-quarters.

And I think you should pay for more than just a no-name power supply unit (PSU). If you are going to set up a gaming rig then you need at least a 400 watt PSU to cope with the power-hungry graphics card.

AMD currently seem to have the best CPU's for gaming but the new Conroe chips from Intel are coming out in a month or so and are expected to give the edge back to Intel.

You can read all this stuff and browse for computer components on http://www.tomshardware.com/index.html .....A great website for anyone thinking of putting together a computer.

That chip will be mighty costly, that's for sure. I wouldn't be waiting for that with a budget of 1 million. Chances are it will eat 400,000 + of your cash for the first six months.

My suggestions:

1: A good graphics card. 7900GT or better. Personally, I'd opt for the 7900GT. If you had money to burn, the X1900XT is excellent.

2: A good CPU. AMD, for sure. Dual core chips are the way of the future, which makes single core chips cheap. For now, I'd suggest an Athlon64 3500+, and upgrade to an Athlon X2 4200+ or better later on. If you want to spend a bit more now and less later, get the Athlon X2 4200+ now.

3. Good RAM. Well, you're out of luck here, there isn't a lot of good RAM still available. Acceptable RAM will have to do. A pair of matched 512MB modules would be best, or a pair of 1GB modules.

4. A good motherboard (or mainboard, in Korea). A good brandname, like ASUS, preferably with SLI capability so you could use 2 graphics cards later on for even better gaming performace.

5. A good power supply. Must have a high sustained watt rating, and PCI-express connectors for your graphics card. Quiet is also good. Expect to pay a bit for this.

6. A nice monitor. If you're not fussed about size and weight, CRT monitors still have the best gaming performance, but if desk space and weight are important, a nice LCD will work well.

7. Hard drive. A 250GB SATA drive is about the minimum I'd go for.

8. A good case. Never underestimate the effects of a good case. It should have good airflow, and 120mm fans for quiet(ish) cooling.

9. Keyboard, mouse. Almost any will do. Onboard sound from a good motherboard is adequate for most needs, and can be paired with headphones (to not annoy the neighbors) or a good set of speakers.

That's just my ideas. Hope it helps.
