I honestly think that "The Star-Spangled Banner" is the best national anthem. It's just an opinion.

It actually brings tears to my eyes when I hear it.

England????? Last time I checked England wasn't recognized as an independent state, and didn't have a UN seat. Therefore it couldn't possibly adopt Land of Hope and Glory, since both it and God Save the Queen are already owned by a different state - THE UNITED KINGDOM!!!!

Am I wrong in assuming that people on this site have uni degrees?
Jeez.

No, but we don't all have the same majors.

You guys actually listen to the anthems? Yikes.

You gotta love the overcompensation by Northern Ireland fans. I swear, every meathead in Northern Ireland chooses their football team on religious grounds alone. Twits.

Well, then how come God Save the Queen is played at every England match if it is 'owned' (does the UK have the copyright?) by the UK? It could adopt Land of Hope and Glory and it would be a much better national anthem, than the ode to her majesty we have at the moment.

As far as football tournaments are concerned, England is a separate country. Only a Yank would be ignorant of this fact, surely?

Jerusalem would be even better in my opinion. I like Rule Brittania, but I fear it would be too diffuclt for our players to sing.

Italy should certainly use chorus of the Hebrew slaves by Verdi (maybe change the lyrics slightly). That stiring anthem is wasted if not used in that way. As it stands, the Russian anthem is the best.

The Marseillaise is the best one by a long way, I watched the Japan v Croatia game in a Toyko bar and was impressed at how the Japanese fans around me sang their anthem in perfect tune.....they must get loads of practice at Karoke.

re The England anthem debate: I think it was Billy Connolly who suggested we use the theme tune to The Archers.

I like that idea.

Next time you meet some pub bore who bangs on about changing GSTQ to Land of hope and glory ask them what the lyrics to Land of Hope and glory are.

"Well, the first line is Land of hope and glory and then errrr..................."

F you had any Brit friends, they might be offended. The tune of the American anthem is a British drinking song, so I guess if you just changed the nationality you would be right: British pop culture.

What the *beep*? No its not. What fucking song is that? I definately don't sing the shitty yank song when I'm drunk.

Regarding JLarter's post, "The Star Spangled Banner" was set to the melody from "To Anacreon in Heaven", which later became famous as a drinking song.

The Anacreontic Society began as a social club originally comprised of professional men, who were amateur musicians and gathered in London to promote music during the latter half of the 18th century. Supposedly, it still exists today: http://glyfix.com/soa/anacreon.html
