Who will become Korea's third premier leaguer? The European trade market is open as of Saturday, hotter than usual amid the ongoing World Cup. Already the big guns including Chelsea and Manchester United have begun the background hustling. Although Korea failed to make it to the Round of 16, the names of Ahn Jung-hwan (Duisburg), Cho Jae-jin (Shimizu S-Pulse), Lee Eul-yong (Trabzonspor), and Seol Ki-hyeon (Wolverhampton Wanderers) are on the tip of scouting agents tongues due to the strong impressions they made.
The main question is who will make it to the Premier League, everyones dream destination, after Park Ji-sung (Manchester United) and Lee Young-pyo (Tottenham Hotspur).
It looks like Ahn Jung-hwan might have the best shot. Even before the World Cup, the player had been on the receiving end of love calls from a few major teams, including New Premiership club Reading FC and Watford. Scotland's Hearts has already made a public attempt to woo the football star. In scoring the decisive turnaround goal in the match with Togo, Ahn raised his worth. His contract with Duisburg finished on Friday.
Cho Jae-jin also made his existence known to Europe by way of the World Cup. In the three matches of Group G play, he proved his value as a striker, and made it onto the Guardian's "Six top talents made for the Premiership list. Currently the Dutch team NAC Breda and Ajax are showing interest in the South Korean. But in this situation, there is now strong reason for Cho to turn his steps towards the Netherlands since he also hankers after a Premier League job.
Lee Eul-yong, meanwhile, has caught the eyes of some teams including West Ham United. But his less-than-perfect performance at the World Cup has put him at a disadvantage. His representatives hope that with slightly reduced conditions, an advance into the Premier League is still possible. Seol Ki-hyeon is reportedly being eyed by Reading.
The Premier League is the stage for all Korean footballer's dreams. And now it's time to wonder who will make it up on that stage -- the door is open |
