I don't know how many of ESL'ers are aware of this movie, but if you have a chance to see 맨발의 기봉이, or "Barefoot Ki-Bong," do yourself a favor and go watch it!
The story is based on a real person, Ki-Bong, who is mentally handicapped and was trying to win a marathon a few years ago. The movie follows his heartwarming efforts with many hilarious scenes.
I thought the movie was very well done, both in terms of the story and the character. I can imagine this film not being well-received by some, as they might say the laughs come at the main character's expense. However, I thought the comedic scenes were done tastefully, in a manner that endears the character onto the audience.
Some of the best acting and storytelling I have ever witnessed. Please go see it.
**Please note, I was only able to see this movie by renting it in a video store here in Los Angeles, so I have no idea if it's still in movie theaters. If it's still only in theaters in Korea, I wonder if there are any that offer subtitles. And if it's been released for rental/sale, can someone please tell me if the dvd's offer English subs? I'd love to show it to my friends. |
