61: GER - ITA 2-4
Italy lost games against the hosts of the last two World Cups with questionable calls (France in '98, Korea '02). Will three times be a charm? I think so. This team qualified more easily for the tourney than any other team (a whole 5 points ahead of the next best team in their group), spanked Germany earlier this year 4-1 in a not-so-friendly friendly. And that was with the following star out with injury at the time:
Francesco Totti, the superstar in the doghouse for lacklustre international play leading up to the tourney, was never in doubt to get the start given his huge success in league play, and he has looked good, getting several great chances and scored the biggest goal of the tourney for Italy: in the only game they had won by less than a two-goal margin, the 1-0 Australia game.
The coach's favorite, Luca Toni, came off the bench in six of the eight qualifying games and scored four goals, including a hattrick, earning a starting position and coming through with two goals in the Ukraine game.
I want to say 4-0 Italy but a couple of questionable calls will make it closer than that. How one can think Germany will win 3-1 with two half-stars against a stable full of Italian stallions is beyond me. It will not be very close guys. Trust me.
62: POR - FRA 0-2
Defense, Zidane and Henry has been a longstanding formula for success. And they look like they're having fun out there. It's infectious. Portugal will play too tight and give up one on a mistake and never recover. Of course I demonstrate tremendous gall betting against the legendary Brazilian coach Scolari, who almost always coaches teams to championships. Geez Luiz, couldn't you have stayed with the new world team? They needed your fire in their lacklustre exit last game. This game will be closer than it looks, but Portugal will gamble when down and pay the price. Look for Viera or Ribery to score the insurance goal. (we should have guessed a goal scorer, would've been more interesting - next time) |

He he. Good point Njord. I should pay attention to soccer more.
FRA 0 - ITA, 2
POR 2 - GER, 1
Germany's coach has rumored to want to leave. I think this will put too much on the young squad and they'll pretty much just quit.
Does France have the legs in Zizou's finale? |

I don't buy these suddenly inflated points (edited in recently).
FACT: Gee, if the leader huffydaddy and third place and way behind mathew's world both guess the winner but mathew's world guesses the correct score, then surprise surprise, 8pts+12pts = share of the championship on top!
huffydaddy won this well before the final with great early round predictions
this could have been close, but it wasn't!!
congratulations huffydaddy
woo hoo!
But you're still wrong about who will win the finals as you were about both of the semis. |

huffydaddy? Watch it, or I'll give VirginIslander dibs on VI.
FRA-ITA 0-1
GER-POR 2-0
and don't forget your semi-final picks - that game is Sunday morning, the finals Monday morning. |
