I have joined this site "Garageband.com" for indie artists. It's basically a site where you stuff can get reviewed by other artists and put into a contest.
I've realized (i've always kinda known) that I'm not that great at taking criticism.
I thought my song was pretty great and the people who know me as a friend seem to think it's alright. But I think there is something about the song that you kinda need to know me to not think it's a boring, ill performed piece.... made me wonder why I chose to put that one into the contest first.
So many folks here seem so self confident and it makes me think that y'all are pretty good with takin' criticism...or maybe not.

At WORK, I take it great..all makes sense: I "adapt, act, re-adapt, apt" with no problems
maybe it's just something about my art...

The important part of receiving criticism is not to care when you get it.

Brush it off and go on your own way.

Criticism is great. Look at what people wrote and think about it. They might be onto something. But try to stick to your artistic vision. Im on several sites where people critique photos. I think that it has helped me immensely to not only improve my skills but also to develop a certain style or vision. If I was just shooting for me, none of that would have happened. Im sure its the same with music.

Laughing Anyone? Someone? Laughing

Sorry jinju, but that's just great comedy.

EDIT: Oh yeah...the OP.

I guess it depends who it's coming from. Strangers on the net? Nah...they may be jealous or just jerks. Disregard it. Freinds? Too subjective. People who I respect, whose opinions I can trust. Listen to all, but regard few. Most of all, listen to yourself. If you like it, then it's done.

All depends on who it's from and how it's done. If someone is criticizing to be a d*ck, I don't smile and give it deep contemplation. But when my boss sat down with me and gave me a list of things I could do differently in class, and how I'm making mistakes with student relationships, yeah, I gave that a lot of consideration.

If I were to put a piece of my artwork up on a website, I'd probably be ready to accept whatever criticism it receieves.

Jinju, notice my proper use of the subjunctive tense. If I WERE. Twisted Evil

From people who know what they are talking about and are being genuine, of course it's the best way to learn, but not from knobs...

herein lies the problems of having friends who are undyingly kind and not always honest.

thanks for that folks...

Some of these reviewers are just gits off the net but they are most ALL musicians.

If a very accomplished person who does things that I respect critiques me, I take it to heart. If a bumbling fool says the EXACT same things, I would probably ignore it.
Such is my nature...for better or worse.

**the strange thing is, for my particular example:
The reviewer was pretty adament about my likeness to the Beach boys: Something I had never considered. In fact, I only started listening to them the last few months. The song I had posted was 4 years old and in no way, influenced by the Beach Boys.
his quote was basically "sorry, yeah... like the beach boys but out of tune" (which, as i see it, is not the notes but the somewhat uncomely tone my voice has on the recording).

Ahh you and your grammar. Seriously, peer evaluation is the best way to go if you want to improve. Join as many sites that allow you to critique and allow other to critique your work and you will notice improvement. People see things we miss, be it flaws or things that are good but we are not emphasizing enough in our work. Criticism from those who are better than you is always a positive thing.

Q, grammar has no place on Dave's. if I WAS you I wouldnt bring it p Twisted Evil

Screw you for suggesting that I can't handle criticism.
