Yes, I realise that you non-hockey folk have no idea who he is, but he's the only athlete I've ever truly respected and followed...
22 years in the NHL with the same team (Detroit Red Wings) and he respresented his country numerous times, including winning Canada's first Olympic gold in 50 years in 2002...
A classy player who even non-Red Wing fans could respect.

A true legend of the game, he exemplified what a top notch athlete should be. Todays athletes, regardless of sport should learn from this guy.
One of the few who can say he played his entire career with one club and he was the longest serving captain in history, imagine 20 years as a captain. Amazing guy and a "god" like person in the motor city.
Book his place in the hall of fame, no problems mentioning his name when you talk about the best that ever laced them up like gretzky, howe, richard, hull and orr amongst others. |

I'm biased because he was our captain for almost my entire life. It's hard to imagine watching the Red Wings (or hockey) without him. Best of luck to The Captain Stevie Y. We'll be lucky if the next 20 years of Red Wings hockey are half as good.

Explain it to me. I spent pretty much all my life listening to that disgusting racist bag of shit spout his xenophobia on national TV. Not even a privately owned network but the goddamn CBC, which gets its money from taxes paid by people who come from other countries. What dont I get? Does hockey exist in some parallel universe where racist vitriol is actually NOT racist vitriol? Don Cherry is a worthless piece of shit. |

1. Did I make negative comments on hockey? If I did id say something about Yzerman.
2. I dont hate hockey. I find it really a boring, pointless sport. A a silly one too. But the sentence makes no sense. it implies that only people who dont know the sport would hate it and that people who know it couldnt possibly hate it. Thats pretty stupid. Ofcourse I know hockey, ofcoure I know Cherry. Its precisely because I know the guy that I hate him. His racist, xenophobic views vomited on national TV on a weekly basis are my reason for hating him. |

For someone who hates hockey it seems to take up a good chunk of your time while here on Daves.
This thread is about Steve Yzerman, you got something to say about him then go ahead, otherwise take the hints and stay out of the hockey threads.
I think you actually like the sport, otherwise why would a human endure reading and writing about something he says he hates.

All I will say is that Yzerman represents to me what sport used to be. Before the bling bling came and destroyed the spirit of the game. Bling is the reason why I refuse to watch basketball anymore, a sport I used to like actually. Hockey:) Well, I dont dislike it...I was being a bit of a *beep* but only to turn the tables on the World Cup bashers. I just lost interest in it. Its the "out of sight out of mind" principle. Same with pretty much all aspects of life back home. I couldnt tell you any new music acts, or new actors or any of that stuff that people back home care about. Im 30 and Ive pretty much shed all of my previous interests. |

I understand the anti-bling thing. I hate the way the NBA promos are all about overdone dunks. But I still like bball. Just watch the NCAA more and cheer for the likes of Duncan and Dirk when I watch the NBA. Yzerman was to hockey in Detroit what Barry Sanders was to football. Great, exciting athletes without all the attitude. |
